Rochdale 2 Chesterfield 3 Date: 14/11/2009 3,011 Referee: Phil Gibbs
Chesterfield came away from Spotland with all three points after they won a thrilling game by three goals to two.
Jack Lester gave Chesterfield a 2-0 lead at half-time before goals from Chris O'Grady and Craig Dawson drew Dale level early in the second half. However, a winner from David Perkins in the 63rd minute was enough to see Dale lose for a second time in a week.
Dale boss Keith Hill was asked after the game if it was a case of tea-cups and tantrums in the dressing by Mark Clemitt for tonight's Football League Show.
"Not really no, a true apraisal of that game will be the remaining we have. Take nothing away from Chesterfield they are an excellent side but we were no were near our best in the first half and we didn't perform.
"We didn't perform with our bodies or our minds. Ability is one thing but you have to produce the effort by bringing the work bag and we didn't today."
There was just one change to the side from Wednesday's FA Cup exit to Luton Town, with Friday's loan signing from Manchester United, Tom Heaton, making his Dale debut in goal. Scott Wiseman came in at right-back in place of Marcus Holness, whilst Rory McArdle and Craig Dawson partnered one another in central defence. Tom Kennedy started at left-back. Keith Hill went with three in the middle of the park, with Dale Stephens coming into the side alongside Jason Kennedy and Gary Jones who was in a more advanced role. Simon Whaley was on the left, whilst Chris O'Grady and Chris Dagnall partnered each other up top, with the latter coming out to the right hand side to link play up. Former Dale players Tommy Lee and David Perkins were in the Chesterfield side and both received a warm welcome from the home fans.
Dale will have wanted to get off to the best possible start in front of the Spotland crowd after Wednesday's disappointment. They enjoyed some early pressure, with Gary Jones having half a chance from distance, but his shot went comfortably wide of Tommy Lee's post. Chris O'Grady also had a decent chance in the 8th minute, but his half-volley on the turn sailed over the crossbar.
The first real chance came in the 10th minute, through Dale's leading goalscorer Chris Dagnall. Simon Whaley picked the ball up on the left side and played a ball into the feet of Chris O'Grady. He lightly touched the ball back to Dagnall who took the ball onto his left foot before forcing Tommy Lee into a fine save to his right, turning the ball behind for a corner.
It wasn't all Dale, with Chesterfield enjoying possession in Dale's half mainly through Jack Lester who was leading the line. Kieran Djilali was causing problems down the Dale right, with Scott Wiseman getting himself into a twist at one point before Craig Dawson came across to make a fine challenge.
Chesterfield had a great chance of their own to break the deadlock in the 18th minute. Jack Lester picked up the ball between Dale's midfield and defence before playing in Wade Small. His first touch took him past Rory McArdle, but the Spireites' striker dragged his left-foot shot wide of Tom Heaton's left hand post.
The game was really kicking into life with good chances for both sides. Chris Dagnall was at the forefront of Dale's attacking game and he forced Tommy Lee into another good save in the 20th minute. Dagnall picked the ball up on the right before cutting inside on his left foot. He fired off a powerful drive from 20 yards, forcing Tommy Lee to fist the ball over the crossbar for a corner. Rory McArdle almost produced the spectacular from the corner, but his overhead kick went well over the crossbar.
A massive blow came for Dale in the 25th minute, with Chesterfield taking the lead. David Perkins whipped in a free-kick from the right side towards Rob Page, but his header looped up into the air. It came down for Ian Breckin who nodded the ball calmly to Jack Lester who had an east tap-in from two yards to give John Sheridan's side the lead.
Dale would need another strong comeback if they were to get anything from the game, something which seems to be a regular occurrence in recent weeks. A good response was needed if this was to come and Simon Whaley had a thunderous and swerving effort which just flew over Tommy Lee's crossbar.
However, just three minutes later Chesterfield doubled their lead and it was Jack Lester who silenced the home fans again. A Tommy Lee kick-out was flicked on by Drew Talbot and into the path of Jack Lester who beat Craig Dawson to the ball before carrying it on and calmly beating Tom Heaton to send the Chesterfield fans inside Spotland into raptures.
Dale seemed shocked, and it would now take another mammoth effort from Keith Hill's side if they were to get anything from the game. It was nearly an even bigger mountain to climb when Drew Talbot broke free of the Dale defence. He was bearing down on Tom Heaton, but unselfishly squared the ball for Wade Small in the middle of the area. However, a fantastic interception from Craig Dawson denied Small and Dale cleared the ball from danger.
The home side were managing to get their foot back on the ball and looking to create an opening for a way back into the match. However, no real chances could be created and it was Chesterfield who had another good chance to score a third. Jack Lester sprung the offside trap but he dragged his shot just wide of the Dale goal.
The good football Keith Hill's side are known for was starting to show again following those two quick goals from Chesterfield. Chris O'Grady showed great strength and touch to bring down a ball on his chest before turning and getting a shot off, but it was easy to handle for Tommy Lee as he picked it up.
Dale made a change in the 42nd minute, with Will Buckley coming on for Dale Stephens on the wing as Dale reverted to a 4-4-2 formation. Simon Whaley came over to the right side as Buckley took up position on the left.
The three minutes of added time indicated by fourth official Richard Clark failed to produce anything of note and Dale went in at half-time two goals down, with some work to do in the second half if they were to get anything from the game.
Dale made their second change at half-time, with Matt Flynn coming on in the unfamiliar position of central midfield in place of captain Gary Jones who picked up a knock in the first half.
Keith Hill's side would need a strong and quick start to the second half if they were to pick anything up from the game. They started strongly, with Chris Dagnall forcing a smart block from a Spireite defender and Will Buckley producing a good save from Tommy Lee after he ran at the Chesterfield defence.
In the 49th minute of the game, Chris O'Grady provided a route back into the game for Dale with a fine goal. He received the ball into his feet with his back to goal before turning and striking a left-footed effort into the far side of Tommy Lee's goal, dragging Dale back into the game early on in the second half.
The noise levels in Spotland were raised as the home fans realised another Dale comeback was on the cards. It certainly was in the 7th minute of the second half, when another Dale attack brought with it another Dale goal. A corner was swung in by Simon Whaley to the back post and nodded down into the goal by Craig Dawson. It seemed to take an age for the goal to be allowed, the eagle-eyed linesman on the far side waved his flag for the ball crossing the line and Spotland erupted as Keith Hill's side were back on level terms.
Those two quick goals gave Dale another wind as Chesterfield seemed to be in shellshock. Chris Dagnall and Simon Whaley both had promising efforts blocked as the away side through everything in-front of the ball to ensure they didn't concede a third.
However, it was the Spireites who came closest to scoring the 5th goal of the game, with only the woodwork denying them. They won a free-kick just outside the Dale area which was played square by Kieran Djilali to Mark Little. The right-back's shot took a deflection en route to goal and looped up onto the bar before bouncing clear.
Chesterfield's pressure continued and that pressure did bring a 5th goal of the game, with former Dale player David Perkins delivering a blow to his former side in the 63rd minute. Jack Lester had the ball on the edge of the area before laying the ball off to Perkins who side-footed the ball with his left boot towards goal. The effort took a deflection off Matt Flynn which was just enough to take the ball away from Tom Heaton and nestle in the bottom corner. Perkins didn't celebrate the goal at his former stomping ground despite the celebrations of his fellow team-mates and fans.
With Dale falling behind again, it would take another brilliant effort from the home side to get back into the match and get a result. Both sides had possession in good areas, with Chesterfield almost having good openings through Jack Lester and Wade Small. However, as the game ticked on Dale started to get a better foothold and push on, with a lot of play coming down the left side through the impressive Will Buckley. He was causing Mark Little problems on the Chesterfield right and almost produced an opening for Chris Dagnall, but the defence of the away side held strong and kept Dale's leading scorer out.
The game entered the final ten minutes with Dale still looking for a proper opening to get back into the game. Simon Whaley whipped in a dangerous free-kick from the left which was beaten away by Tommy Lee as Dale attackers closed in. Will Buckley had an ambitious effort from 25 yards but the ball sailed well over Tommy Lee's crossbar.
As the clocked ticked into the final two minutes, Chris Dagnall looked certain to score following a great move from Dale. Tom Kennedy gave the ball to Simon Whaley then Chris O'Grady before finding himself in the penalty area. He rolled the ball sideways to Dagnall who was in acres of space, but he took a touch instead of shooting first time and was eventually forced back out by Chesterfield defenders. Simon Whaley had a good effort from distance but the ball just flew wide of Tommy Lee's right hand post.
Four minutes of added time were signalled by the 4th official, but Dale couldn't produce anything of note as attacks became desperate from the home side. The referee blew his whistle to bring an end to a fantastic game, but one which ended in disappointment for Keith Hill's side as his side lost for the second time in a week.
It's onto another big game at Dagenham on Saturday now as Dale need to get back to winning ways in London.
