WADDOCK: "I WAS EMBARRASSED"
Posted on: Sat 14 Nov 2009
Chairboys chief Gary Waddock says he was "embarrassed" after watching his side lose 6-0 at Huddersfield on Saturday lunchtime.
He said: "It wasn't good enough. We didn't compete; we didn't defend as a group and to be fair the scoreline should have been a lot heavier than it was. I was embarrassed, full stop.
"I will take the result because that's my job but they have to take care of their own performances and their performances weren't good enough.
"We are in the position we are in for a reason. We have to address that and we will."
Waddock added: "Me and my assistant (Martin Kuhl) are fighters and if we don't see that spirit amongst the group of players we've got we will address it.
"For me the season starts today. The honeymoon period has finished - underlined, capital letters, finished. Decisions will be made.
"If players want to do it and jump on board with us - great - but if they don't they can go and find a future elsewhere.
"For me the getting-to-know-you period is over. I told them that at half time and I told them again in no uncertain times afterwards. It is now decision time. They are playing for their futures."
The 6-0 scoreline equals the Wanderers' worst ever league defeat and the Blues boss admitted his side's defending was "appalling".
Waddock said: "Huddersfield are an extremely good side but we have got to be able to compete and defend. Our defending was appalling.
"That wasn't even a standard we set today, we didn't compete and we didn't mark people. They are professional footballers and they didn't do the jobs that you expect to be done.
"I hope this is the worst day I ever experience as a manager."
The defeat at the Galpharm Stadium leaves the Blues bottom of League One but Waddock believes his side will escape the drop.
He said: "It's been a bad day and we've lost another three points, but we haven't been relegated yet and we're not going to be.
"Our season starts here. That's fighting talk and I want to see that in my players. I want them to fight, to scrap and battle to get points home and away.
"I have asked the players how many of them expect to play on Wednesday and told them not to come knocking on my door if they are not in the team.
"It's time to make decisions. Players will like it if they are involved, players won't like it if they are not.
"I will be speaking to the owner (Steve Hayes) and the chairman (Ivor Beeks), telling them my thoughts and my views and then we will take it from there."
