16 Years Ago: Holloway Talking about QPR "Exciting Times...Club is Stabilizing...Move Forward-... Talking about injuries, new signings, need for investment, etc
November 10, 2005 QPR Official Site - Ian Holloway Speaking
Talking to QPR World about his sides start to the season, Holloway pinpointed his sides main area for improvement.
As usual, Ollie wasn't keen to give too much away at this point of the season, choosing instead to focus on that position Rangers find themselves in next April. Of course the Rangers boss was keen to see more action up front and he has already set his sights on improving that area.
"We need to score more goals, we are lacking a few from the chances we created. I want to work on that, getting more goals in that column." Ian Holloway and his staff will take advantage of the free weekend by going out on a scouting mission. Holloway told QPR World: "I'll be giving my players the weekend off and I'll be off with my staff looking at players. We also have some exciting prospects waiting to come over."
"It's exciting times, I feel we are stabilising. We are now on top of the water - ready to sail off into the sunset." With the transfer window opening in less than two months Holloway will be talking to the board regarding the playing budget.
"I might be close to taking a player in on loan with a view to taking over his contract. I wouldn't mind some more defensive cover too. "When we were in the second division we had the better players becuase we had the biggest budget."
Ollie was also keen to clear up some other business. In a recent Q&A on QPR World Holloway referred to a quote in a Newspaper attributed to QPR fan Paul Finney
"Typical me, I said some things I shouldn't of said. It turns out the guy I spoke about had some threats from other fans.
"I didn't want that - this guy is a QPR fan! He explained things to me and I apologised to him. If my words got him that kind of abuse I am ashamed of myself."
Elsewhere, after only three starts this season Martin Rowlands was a welcome sight as he started back in full training. "I thought I had a new signing today some little lad with blonde hair. It's great to have him back although I'm not sure whether he will be match fit for the game at Plymouth because he has been out quite a while."

Bump/Edit....8 years ago....Holloway re Breaker still on Gardening Leave From the Plymouth Fan Site "Argyle Daily Diary," November 4: "Ian Holloway's attempts to bring Tim Breacker to Home Park have had to be put on hold. Breacker is still being paid by QPR, but is not part of John Gregory's staff. Holloway wants to hire him, but an agreement that had almost been reached with the London club seems to have collapsed. "I feel for Tim at the moment," Holloway said. "QPR are being a bunch of idiots. They're still paying him, but they've reneged on certain things that they said they were going to do and there's no deal any more. I can't understand it, to be perfectly honest with you. I don't what QPR are doing. It's absolute madness. I don't think you should treat people like that, and I'm very, very, very disappointed, to say the least." 5 years ago, Ainsworth talking before Man Ut game
OJPickup Blog ([Not sure of original source for this]
- AINSWORTH HOPING FOR "UNBELIEVABLE" OLD TRAFFORD RESULT- Gareth Ainsworth hopes that an "unbelievable" result against reigning European and English champions Manchester United on Tuesday night in the Carling Cup Fourth Round will help convince Queens Park Rangers co-owner Flavio Briatore that he is the right man for the manager's job on a permanent basis. - The 35-year-old caretaker boss, who took over from Iain Dowie at the end of last month, is currently QPR's longest serving player and has impressed in his first few games in charge. - And he will put another superb entry on his short managerial CV if he can mastermind a famous Rangers victory at Old Trafford. - Ainsworth, who saw his team defeat Cardiff on Saturday, said: "I'm enjoying it a lot and at the moment I am taking it day by day. Flavio Briatore and the fans have given me their backing so far. As long as that is going on I am a happy man - I'm proud to be at the helm of QPR. - "I've been here a long time and I just want the club to do well. If Flavio does decide to put me in charge then fantastic. If he doesn't then I will stay in some capacity. I'm really enjoying pitting my wits against managers. - "I'm in at the deep end but when troubled times do come I can look back at this and say: 'We got through that OK. We can keep together and get through anything now.' - "It's been a real baptism of fire. We have moved into the top six in the Championship, defeated the top-of-the-table team Birmingham and now we have a trip to Old Trafford to play the European Champions in the Carling Cup." - Ainsworth added: "I've faced United twice as a player, in the 1999/2000 season when Wimbledon were relegated. But we drew twice, so perhaps that bodes well. - "Playing in the Premier League against sides like United was the highlight of my playing career. Some of the boys can have a taste of what that is like tonight. It will be a fantastic experience and opportunity for them. - "I don't need to get them up for it - what more motivation do they need when they are playing the European and Premier League champions at Old Trafford? If they can't get up for it then they shouldn't be in my squad. - "I'm a Blackburn Rovers fan through and through. I was a season-ticket holder and I did my apprenticeship there. I'm sure everyone in Blackburn will be very happy if we manage the unbelievable and get a result against Manchester United. Blog
Gareth Ainsworth - South Wales Echo “...The lads are backing me all the way and I am proud to be at the helm for QPR and tackling everything head on. We play at Manchester United in midweek and I won’t shy away from any challenge. There has been no talk of time limits in my capacity as caretaker. We are going to Old Trafford and I will get on the coach as manager. Our club owners, Flavio Briatore and Bernie Ecclestone, were in the dressing room before the game. That’s not a problem. The final team is mine, the strategy is mine, substitutions mine. They want to keep an eye on their investment.” WalesonLine
London Enquirer/Paul Warburton - Cook: Give Gareth the job - Lee Cook believes Gareth Ainsworth should be handed the QPR manager's job on a permanent basis. - Caretaker Ainsworth is taking a 20-strong party to Manchester United for the Carling Cup tie at Old Trafford tomorrow night, and his former roommate reckons he's done enough to end speculation about the next permanent boss. - Cook said: "Maybe a win at United could clinch it for him - but it's going to be a tough, tough game. I love Gaz, and all the players are behind him." - But although Cook joked he would check his contract to see what bonuses await if Rs prevail in the Theatre of Dreams, the winger would prefer a win over Burnley next Saturday if forced to choose.- He added: "The league game is more important. Burnley are above us, and a win against them could put us in the top five...." London Enquirer
TEAMTALK - Ainsworth relishing Fergie tussle - QPR caretaker boss Gareth Ainsworth admits he will be pinching himself when he glances along the touchline at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.Just over three weeks ago, the veteran QPR winger was an occasional bench warmer and reserve team coach at Loftus Road. But as caretaker boss following Iain Dowie's sacking last month, Ainsworth is now preparing to lock horns with Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United in the fourth round of the Carling Cup. "I'll admit I will be in awe of him, he's a great manager," said the 35-year-old. "If you'd asked me a few weeks ago then not in my wildest dreams did I think I'd be pitting myself against him. "It's going to be a massive challenge for us and an amazing experience for the boys. Some people say they won't play their first team but their second team is pretty good as well. "We'll just take it as it comes. I'll be a very proud man to be in the opposite dug-out to Sir Alex, it will be a big moment in my career." Teamtalk
Daily Mail - I'll show Hodgson he was wrong by knocking Man United out the Cup, says QPR's Cook QPR winger Lee Cook feels Tuesday’s Carling Cup tie at Manchester United can help him prove to Fulham boss Roy Hodgson that he was wrong to not give him a chance at Craven Cottage. Lawrie Sanchez brought Cook, now 26, to Fulham in the summer of 2007 but a knee injury meant the highly-rated midfielder missed the first half of the season. By the time he regained his fitness, Hodgson was at the helm and farmed Cook out on loan to Charlton. The former Watford man eventually rejoined QPR this summer having never made an appearance for the Cottagers. And having missed Rangers’ shock win at Aston Villa in the last round, he is now desperate to show Hodgson what he missed out on.
'Unfortunately, I didn’t get a chance there after my injury,’ he said. ‘I’ve had to come out on loan and start again really. 'It’s disappointing that I wasn’t given a chance but I’m back at QPR now and trying to get them back into the Premier League where Fulham are. Maybe one day I can prove myself to them when I play them.’ And Cook feels, despite his setback, he does still have the talent to perform at the highest level. He said: ‘Definitely. It’s a confidence thing. I know the ability is there, it’s just getting the confidence. 'And when you put the two together, confidence and ability, no one should be able to stop you. 'I’m hoping United play a decent side so you can test yourself against the best. 'They lost on Saturday, so Ferguson is probably going to try to get them going again. 'It could be one of those backlashes but we’ve got to go there and just perform the way we can.’ Questions have been asked about how much influence of QPR owner Flavio Briatore has in the Rangers dressing room but Cook feels the Italian’s pre-match visits alongside F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone are nothing to worry about. ‘It’s great. They were down in the dressing room before the game against Cardiff to give us a bit of a gee up and it was good,’ he said. ‘The players enjoy it. Flavio is very passionate about this place and he wants every player to show a lot of passion and commitment. 'Show passion, show commitment, show you want to play for this football club. Hopefully now the F1 season is finished, Bernie will start getting involved a little bit more.’ Meanwhile, Rangers caretaker manager Gareth Ainsworth is relishing going head to head with Sir Alex Ferguson. ‘‘I’ll be a very proud man to be in the opposite dugout to Sir Alex Ferguson,’ said the former Wimbledon midfielder. 'I’ve played against United in my Wimbledon days but I’ve never met Sir Alex. I admit, I will be in awe. I think he’s a fantastic guy, a great manager and not in my wildest dreams did I think I’d be pitting my wits against him.’ And what about stealing a win at Old Trafford and taking QPR a step closer to Wembley? ‘We’re the underdogs, we’re not expected to win anything, but if we show the passion we showed against Cardiff, we can achieve anything at this club. 'We want to go there and give a good account of ourselves and who knows what can happen’, he added. Mail

Bump...
3 Months after that "Stabilizing" comment, Paladini did what he did. Pathetic what he did and how he did it.
QPR Report/Metro -Feb 7, 2013 Seven years since the axing of Ian Holloway and the change to QPR
This week’s blog post could focus on the current relegation-threatened plight of the club. Or it could focus on the seeming PR blitz by QPR Chairman Tony Fernandes and QPR CEO, Philip Beard to reassure (or convince) fans and the press that everything is under control – even if the club does go down. (That will presumably be one of the central messages at Thursday’s long-awaited (SIX years) fan forum.) Or it could even focus on Saturday’s game at Swansea – in which QPR play the ‘return’ game of their disastrous season opener. An opener which saw the predicted mid-table finishers implode 0-5 at home to Swansea, and start the club on its current path.
However, I thought I would look back to an event seven years ago today, when arguably the transformation towards being a bigger, if not necessarily better, QPR began.
Today marks the 55th anniversary of the horrific Munich Air Disaster which devastated the then Manchester United team (and many others).
Today also marks – and in the overall scheme of things, obviously a far less significant anniversary - the seven year anniversary since QPR announced that Ian Holloway (along with his coaching staff) had been placed on ‘gardening leave ‘ and that youth team coach, Gary Waddock was caretaker manager. (After a disastrous end-of-season run of matches, Waddock was rewarded by being appointed permanent manager – before being a sacked a couple months later as that disastrous run carried over into the new season, after a strange summer. Not so logical. But so very, very QPR!)
Meanwhile QPR continue to search for that word which was much used for a while by our current chairman – stability.
The stated explanation for why Holloway was being terminated was that he had interviewed with another club (Leicester City.) That might have a certain validity had he not been granted permission to hold that interview. (Some suggest he was even encouraged to have that interview.)
The club statement announcing his departure said: ‘QPR has not sacked Ian, but we are concerned about recent performances and the effect the speculation about Ian joining Leicester City might have on the players.’ As Chairman Gianni Paladini subsequently phrased it: ‘If a man is happily married why would he look for another woman? If you get the opportunity to speak to someone it’s your choice whether to go, or to stay.” (Why Holloway’s coaching staff was also put on gardening leave was never explained)
At the time of his axing, Holloway was QPR’s longest-serving manager since Alec Stock (who left the club in 1968 – and who was in charge of QPR for seven years before he achieved a little something (Third Division Title and League Cup!) Besides his managerial qualities (and flaws) Holloway epitomized something more – the heart and soul of QPR. Ian Holloway had been with QPR when they had been relegated back to the Third Division having just lost the Chairman. With the Club in administration, Holloway had built a team to challenge for promotion, virtually out of straw. He had seen QPR lose the playoff final at the Millennium Stadium after the highly-suspicious hotel ‘fire alarm’ incident. And then the following season win promotion outright, even with the chains of the ABC loan, hanging overhead.
Overall, that 2005-2006 season was a traumatic one for QPR. Pre-Season with some ‘interesting’ signings such as Ugo Ukah. (Signings which got even more interesting the following season) Pre-season, QPR had won a pre-season tournament in Ibiza which the club quaintly highlighted on its website as “European Champions”…It was a season of alleged ‘guns in the boardroom’ and police arrests (and subsequent trial and acquittals); a ‘boardroom coup’ in which Brazilian World Cup Captain, Dunga had flown in to help overthrow then QPR Chairman, Bill Power (BP) and install in his place, Gianni Paladini. (For some, the Paladini years were certainly good ones. For others, not so great!)
Seven years and some 13 QPR managers later (depending how one counts) – Waddock, Gregory, De Canio, Dowie. Soousa, Magilton, Hart, Harford, Warnock, Hughes and Sousa. Plus an acting managership for Harford and caretaker stints for Ainsworth. A 14th Manager in the summer, seems a distinct possibility. How many of those managers were an improvement on Holloway, and how much QPR lost (both on the field and in their soul) when they got rid of Holloway remains subject to discussion. Meanwhile QPR continue to search for that word which was much used for a while by our current chairman – stability.
