Lanacashire Evening Post Captain could return for Hoops trip Callum Davidson: edging closer to fitness 13 October 2009 By Dave Seddon Skipper Callum Davidson could be a surprise inclusion in the Preston squad for the weekend trip to Queens Park Rangers. The experienced left-back is edging closer to full fitness after more than five weeks on the sidelines suffering from a torn hamstring. He's been back on the training pitch and North End sent 33-year-old Davidson for a check-up last night ahead of a step-up to work with the first-team again. With Paul Parry also looking good for a return to action at Loftus Road following a similar hamstring injury, PNE boss Alan Irvine could at last find himself with some extra selection options after being down to the bare bones of his squad. Irvine told the Evening Post: "Callum will hopefully be joining in with us by the back end of this week. "He did some training with the young professionals yesterday afternoon, so he is getting closer to full fitness. "We're having him scanned just to make sure there is no longer a problem in there, and providing there's not, Callum can step-up his training again. "It might be that he's ready for the QPR game, we'll just see how he is as the week goes on and see what results we get from the scan. "Paul Parry is looking very much in contention for Saturday. "He has been back with the group since last Wednesday and has been training well. We've really missed Paul, he's a very good player and gives us plenty of options with being able to play wide right, wide left and through the middle. "If we can get both him and Callum playing again, the squad would look healthier." Davidson tore his hamstring playing for Scotland at the beginning of September, then Parry did likewise in North End's 2-0 win over Swansea the following week. Full story in Tuesday's Lancashire Evening Post Callum Davidson: edging closer to fitness Keep the National Football Museum in Preston - Click here to back our campaign - sign our petition to Gordon Brown www.lep.co.uk/pnenews/Captain-could-return-for-Hoops.5726864.jpOr previously: Lancashire Evening Post - Callum ruled out for QPR[/b] No rush back: Callum Davidson during his last outing for Preston 09 October 2009 By Tony Dewhurst Alan Irvine has ruled captain Callum Davidson out of North End's next league assignment at Queens Park Rangers tomorrow week. Davidson ripped a hamstring in Scotland's World Cup qualifier against Macedonia, but the PNE boss thinks it could be several more weeks before Davidson is ready for first-team duty again. Irvine said: "We can't rush it, we have to be very careful with Callum's recovery schedule. "It is difficult to put a time scale on when he will be ready again – it has got to be right. "If we bring Callum back too quickly and it goes again then we could be looking at much longer and we certainly don't want that. "Callum is making progress, but I'm not anticipating him featuring next week." Davidson had featured in Preston's first five league games, but was sent off in his last appearance at Ipswich Town on August 29. "I was at the Scotland game the week after and saw Callum's injury happen, and it didn't look like he'd done much, but that's how hamstrings go sometimes and it can be very slow progress," added Irvine. "He's not pushing to train yet, and we'll have to take it day by day." But there is a more positive bulletin on Paul Parry, who also suffered hamstring damage when he limped out of last month's home clash with Swansea. "Paul is in with a real chance of getting back soon, and I would expect him to return for QPR, which is a real boost." Irvine has Ross Wallace, Eddie Nolan and Veliche Shumulikoski all away on international duty, and he will be keeping his fingers firmly crossed none of them pick up any fresh injuries. www.lep.co.uk/pnenews/Callum-ruled-out-for-QPR.5718966.jpAlso: Lancashire Evening Post - October 9, 2009 Chilvers - PNE can defy the oddsBy Tony Dewhurst Liam Chilvers predicts Preston North End can defy the Championship odds again and launch another push towards the Premier League after last season's near miss. "It's going to be tough, but there is no reason why we can't make the play-offs again," said Chilvers. "We've made a great start, and, crucially, we've got a very determined group of players here. "The spirit, the belief in each other, is very strong. "We've all played in this division long enough to know what's needed and we can do it again." North End resume their Championship challenge against Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road next Saturday – then visit Sheffield Wednesday in midweek, before Middlesbrough come to Deepdale. "That's a big seven days, but we've got a lot of hunger in the squad, players who want to achieve their goal of reaching the Premier League," added Chilvers. "At the end of your career you want to have something to show for it, and playing in the best league in the world would be something very special. "We've lost Sean St Ledger and the captain has been injured since August, and hopefully it will not be long before he's back. "Callum's a very important player for us defensively, and just to have him around the team is good because he has so much experience. "We've had a couple of blips, Sc**thorpe and Reading, but every single player has dug deep, and to be fifth in the table is a very good effort." www.lep.co.uk/pnenews/Chilvers--PNE-can-defy.5720293.jp

www.lep.co.uk/pnenews/Wallace-I39m-ready-for-Hoops.5730671.jpWallace: I'm ready for Hoops 14 October 2009 By Dave Seddon Globetrotting winger Ross Wallace insists his feet are firmly back on the ground in readiness for Preston North End's trip to Queens Park Rangers this weekend. Wallace collected a first senior Scotland cap last Saturday in their friendly in Japan, playing 45 minutes of the 2-0 defeat. It involved a 13,000 mile round-trip and two 12-hour flights, but the 24-year-old wideman still turned down the offer of an extra day off in order to start his preparations for the QPR clash. The Loftus Road encounter is followed by another away day, at Sheffield Wednesday next Tuesday, before North End return to Deepdale for back-to-back home games with Middlesbrough and Crystal Palace. Wallace told the Evening Post: "It was a bit of a long trip to Japan but I got my first Scotland cap so it was well worth it. "I've always wanted to play for Scotland, so wherever the game was I was going to get myself there. "In the last year or so I have done all right for Preston so it was nice that it led to this opportunity to play at international level. I'm back now feeling fine. "Going out to Japan was a bit tiring with the jetlag, and it was a 12-hour flight in either direction. "But I've had two training sessions since I got back, so I'm okay. "The gaffer gave me the option of having Monday off and coming back to training yesterday, but I came in as normal on Monday. "I want to be bang at it for Preston again and now we've got a big league game at QPR on Saturday. "It's another tough one, as they all are in the Championship, but away from home we've been going all right this season and hopefully can continue to do www.lep.co.uk/pnenews/Wallace-I39m-ready-for-Hoops.5730671.jp

QPR v Preston: Mellor is PNE's trump Oct 15 2009 London Informer Dave Seddon from the Lancashire Evening Post gives his take on Saturday's game What's the score going to be and why? Preston to sneak a 2-1 win. They're looking to bounce back after a defeat and draw in their last two home games. Who's the danger man to QPR? Neil Mellor. The former Liverpool striker has been in good form recently. Are recent results reflective of Preston's form? Not too reflective. They were beaten 5-1 at home by Spurs in the Carling Cup, but the scoreline was harsh - clinical finishing was the difference. PNE then won 2-1 at Leicester, ending the Foxes' year-long unbeaten home record. Back at Deepdale, PNE were beaten 2-1 by Reading - they were 2-0 down by half-time but in the second-half hit the bar three times. The last game before the international break, a 0-0 draw with West Brom, was a fair reflection of play. A mixed bag of results then. How many will Preston bring with them do you think? Around 800 fans I'd say. PNE have a number of fans 'exiled' in London, and Loftus Road seems to be one of the grounds they like visiting. Are there players with scores to settle? Not with QPR in particular. Who is Preston's hard man? Jon 'the Beast' Parkin isn't to be messed with up front! Probable line-up: Lonergan; Jones, Mawene, Collins, Nolan, Sedgwick, Shumulikoski, Carter, Wallace, Parkin, Mellor. Missing injured/suspended: Callum Davidson (skipper), out with a torn hamstring. Paul Parry has also been out with similar injury but could be in the squad. Barry Nicholson is out until after Christmas with a broken leg. What are the 'vibes' from Preston's camp going into the game? Preston are looking forward to being back in action after the international break, and will be looking for at least a point.

Decent preview on the PNE offy Match Preview: QPRPosted on: Thu 15 Oct 2009 www.pnefc.net/page/NewsDetail/0,,10362~1827446,00.html Preston North End fans travelling to Loftus Road this weekend should make the trip expecting goals. The last two trips to West London have produced a total of nine goals, but sadly for Lilywhites fans they have only harvested one point for Alan Irvine's men. A 3-2 defeat last season was preceded by a 2-2 draw the season prior when the Lilywhites threw away a two goal advantage in injury time. Though the anticipated major investment at QPR has not really materialised they remain a club with huge ambitions and great expectations. Jim Magilton was a surprise choice as mananger when he took charge during the summer months and early results suggest that his side are currently in a transitional phase. Magilton looks to have recruited well on the face of it, Alejandro Faurlin a £3.5m signing from Institute the headline grabbing transfer but it's the loans of Adel Taarabt (Tottenham), Tom Heaton (Man Utd), Jay Simpson (Arsenal) and Ben Watson - all from Premier League - that could make the difference. QPR will be protecting an unbeaten home league record on Saturday, one win and three draws. The victory came in their last home performance when they defeated Barnsley 5-2, a game which included a brace of goals from talented Hungarian midfielder Akos Buzsaky. Queens Park Rangers v Preston North End Coca Cola Championship Saturday 17th October 2009, 3pm kick-off Loftus Road Gaffer's Team News "The international break has given Paul Parry a chance, he's trained with us since last Wednesday and he's looked very good. "Callum Davidson joined in with us for part of the session on Tuesday, he joined in with us on Thursday and seems to be perfectly ok so that's good news. "We can't just assume that he's [Paul Parry] is going to be 100 per cent at this moment. It will take him a little bit of time to get up to that, but he's looking very good in the training that we have done, both in terms of the possession and the games." Try out PNE Player for free for 14 days to watch the full interview with the Gaffer The Opposition Turmoil on and off the field is threatening to disrupt the R's season, but then that's nothing new at a club that has become accustomed to dealing with adversity in recent years.
Jim Magilton's side were already facing up to the prospect of being without skipper Martin Rowlands for the visit of PNE this weekend. The tenacious midfielder was red carded in QPR's 2-0 defeat to Swansea a fortnight ago and was suspended for this weekend's match. But Rowlands could now be out for much longer having damaged knee ligaments in the Republic of Ireland's 0-0 draw with Montenegro in midweek. QPR will also be without Ben Watson this weekend, he too saw red at the Liberty Stadium and will sit this one out with his fellow midfielder. Off the field and the future Chairman Flavio Briatore is very much in the air following the Crashgate affair which saw him banned from Formula One for life. Many are suggesting that Briatore would fall short of the Football League's fit and proper persons test, but close friend Bernie Ecclestone is not concerned. "Nobody is worrying about it at QPR," Ecclestone, the Formula One commercial rights-holder, said. "He says that he was not involved in what happened in Crashgate and has maintained that. But anyway, what has that got to do with football? He suffered a harsh punishment in Formula One but it is not as though he could even do the same things in football." The Gaffer "Flavio's very busy at the moment - but I know his thoughts on the team and he's been very positive. Everyone at the club has rallied around and we're looking to get through all of this."The one missing link in Rowan's game at the moment is goals - and we adapted to a system that suits him. "It's affected his confidence and it's something I have to play with before making a choice. I would have liked to have taken Rowan to Ipswich before he came to QPR, and he, like Akos Buzsaky, suffered a bad injury last year. But I have to say that Akos has settled a little bit quicker." Magilton expects Flavio to be at Loftus Road and tells londoninformer.co.uk that he can't make his mind up between Patrick Agyemang and Rowan Vine. The Player "He's [Magilton] a good man, he's a fair man and he picks his squad on merit. "If you're good enough you can be in his squad, and hopefully we can all be good enough, pushing for QPR and winning. "I've got a big respect for John [Gorman] and Jim I think they're doing a great job up there. We've amassed a really good talented squad and I don't think we're going to be too far away this season." Former North End favourite Gareth Ainsworth is still on the playing staff at QPR and confident his side can do well this season. QPR Official Site Preview THE FRIDAY PREVIEW: LILYWHITES Posted on: Fri 16 Oct 2009 Following a two-week break from competitive action, Rangers lock horns with high-flying Preston North End in the Coca Cola Championship on Saturday. The international break concluded with an almighty blow for the R's, with skipper Martin Rowlands' serious knee injury leaving gaffer Jim Magilton with a huge hole to fill in midfield. On the plus side, Tuesday's Reserve fixture against Brentford provided both Fitz Hall and Gareth Ainsworth with the opportunity to get some valuable game time under their belts. Article continues Advertisement MPU A victory for Rangers at Loftus Road would see them close the gap on Preston to just two points, with a game in hand. But it will be anything but a formality against Alan Irvine's men, who has enjoyed a fine start to the season and currently occupy fifth spot in the second tier. Team News Rangers will be without midfield duo Martin Rowlands (knee) and Ben Watson (suspended) for the visit of the Lilywhites. Fitz Hall (groin) and Gareth Ainsworth (tendonitis) could return to the squad, but Hogan Ephraim (ankle) is definitely out. Angelo Balanta (groin), Matthew Connolly (Glandula Fever) and Lee Cook (knee) are all still sidelined. Preston skipper Callum Davidson could be in line to return to the Lilywhites squad. The Scotland defender returned to training this week after over a month on the sidelines with a hamstring injury. Last Time Out QPR 3, Preston North End 2. Coca Cola Championship - Saturday 20th December 2008. Dexter Blackstock rose from the bench to nod home a late winner, after Rangers had twice relinquished the lead to high-flying Preston North End. In a topsy-turvy encounter, Heidar Helguson headed home an early opener, only for Chris Sedgwick to restore parity with a header of his own. After a Patrick Agyemang header fell kindly for the Iceland international to bundle home his and Rangers' second, referee Alan Wiley plunged the match into controversy by awarding a contentious penalty that Callum Davidson duly thundered home. Not to be outdone, Rangers threw everything forward in search of a winner and more than deserved to snatch victory thanks to Blackstock's headed goal. Pre-match Talk R's boss Jim Magilton... "We know we're in for an exceptionally tough test. "They've started the season in really fine fettle, but I genuinely believe we're a match for anyone on our day - as our record in September proved. "I'm determined to see us kick-start a run of six fixtures in 22 days with a victory." Lilywhites midfielder Eddie Nolan... "QPR have a good squad and it will be tough down there. "I think we deserved a draw down there last season, but that sort thing can happen in the Championship." Ying and Yang: Preston big squad fit...QPR the opposite Lancashire Evening Post - Irvine has capital decisions to make 16 October 2009 By Dave Seddon Alan Irvine could have his biggest squad in weeks available when Preston North End head to the capital to take on Queens Park Rangers tomorrow. The North End boss has been down to the bare bones in terms of numbers over the past month, but all that could change at Loftus Road. Paul Parry will be available for action following his recovery from a torn hamstring, and skipper Callum Davidson may also be involved after returning to training earlier this week. On balance, Parry looks the more likely starter, having trained during the international break without any reaction to his injury. A scan has shown that left-back Davidson's hamstring tear has fully healed, although it was only on Tuesday that he was back training with the first-team squad. Irvine told the Evening Post: "Paul has trained with us since a week last Wednesday and has been looking good. "Callum did part of our session on Tuesday and stepped up to a full session yesterday. "If these two lads come back, it would leave Barry Nicholson as our only injured player, so at least we're getting some numbers back. "With Callum, it's wait and see for tomorrow. We wouldn't risk him for the sake of a few days if he felt he needed a little bit longer. "But if he feels fantastic after today's training session, there's every chance of him being involved. He had a scan on Monday night which was all clear, then did an hour of our session on Tuesday. "When a player has had a hamstring injury, you don't want them getting tired because that is when the muscle can get damaged again. So after the first part of the session he went off an did some extra rehabilitation work with the physio." Eddie Nolan is currently in possession of the left-back shirt, but only returned to Springfields this morning after international duty with the Republic of Ireland. www.lep.co.uk/pnenews/Irvine-has-capital-decisions-to.5740011.jp
