JOHN Gorman has ruled himself out of the running to be the next Wycombe Wanderers manager.
- Gorman, who managed the Blues to the brink of promotion three years ago, was at The Priestfield Stadium yesterday to see the Blues go down 3-2 to Gillingham.
- But he says he was there on a scouting mission for his current club QPR and not because he is being lined up as the successor to the sacked Peter Taylor at Adams Park.
- He told the Free Press this morning: “I was at Gillingham because Jim Magilton (Rangers manager) had asked me to go along to watch one of their players. It is just a coincidence that the game was against Wycombe.
- “I haven’t spoken to anyone about the Wycombe job. I haven’t been approached and from what I understand they have got someone in mind.
- “It’s nice to be complimented and to hear that some people would want me back but I am very happy at QPR working with Jim Magilton.
- “I wish whoever gets the Wycombe job good luck and they will always be able to come to me looking for players on loan.”

He's clearly misunderstood the situation. Players go TO Gillingham FROM QPR, not the other way around...

Jackson has earned all the 'paper talk'

Another week goes by and more clubs become linked with Gillingham striker Simeon Jackson.

Blackburn Rovers and Queens Park Rangers are the latest rumoured to be taking an interest in the 22-year-old, joining a host of other clubs from the top two divisions supposedly monitoring the Canada international.

Gillingham have always been at pains to stress they have never even received an enquiry for their top scorer, leading some to write the speculation off as mere ‘paper talk’.

There is certainly a good chance most of the clubs linked with Jackson in the last few months have no serious interest in him – scouts watch hundreds of players every season – but it is hard to believe no one is tempted to make a move in January.

Jackson’s winner against Wycombe on Saturday, an instinctive lob which stood out all the more in a game which for long spells lacked genuine quality, was his 10th goal in 13 games this season. The statistic mocks pre-season predictions from some that the lively forward would struggle in League One.

True, the last time the Gills were in the division he initially looked out of his depth. Joining a poor side in January 2008 from non-league Rushden & Diamonds, Jackson could not live up to unreasonable expectations he could score the goals to keep the club up.

But after finding his feet in League Two last season, which yielded 21 goals for the club and another on debut for Canada, he is now at home in League One and making the £150,000 transfer fee look like an absolute bargain.

Anyone who has seen or heard an interview with the diminutive striker will know he is a man of few words. He is guarded and it is difficult to extract a colourful quote, but one thing which comes across loud and clear when you are face-to-face is his burning determination to improve.

Hang around the club’s training ground and you get a glimpse of his character. As his team-mates trudge off, he stays on, getting a couple of youth team players to feed him balls as he works on his shooting. Goals like his effort against Wycombe don’t happen by accident; they come from this extra time spent willing himself to do better.

It is why Jackson is virtually unrecognisable from the raw, wasteful striker he was when he arrived at Priestfield. He clearly had talent two years ago, but has worked on his weaknesses and is now a far more dangerous player.

Jackson is far from the finished product – he is yet to score away from home this season – but is now justifiably linked with clubs higher up the football pyramid.

Paper talk or not, surely only injury or a disastrous and prolonged loss of form will prevent serious bids in the New Year.
