I remember being puzzled at the time: If he was broke. How could we afford a million pound signing!

NDAH REJECTS RANGERS MOVE
THE proposed £1 million signing of George Ndah from Swindon Town has fallen through due to the player's personal terms.
Director of football Gerry Francis explains: "We did try to sign George Ndah. I'm disappointed because I felt he is a player who would have benefited us.
"But we have a wage structure at Rangers due to our financial problems and we cannot change that, otherwise we will never move forward and get better.
"We have been consolidating here for the past 11 months. We sold Mike Sheron and signed players from non-League clubs.
So it is important now to try to strengthen the squad and there may be some money available due to the sale of the Wasps rugby ground.
"One door closes and another opens. We won't be signing George Ndah but over the next few weeks hopefully we'll still be looking to strengthen the squad.
"If I've got a bit more money to spend, I'm going to get players who are established if possible.
In doing so, you have to match those players' wages which is obviously going to be difficult for us.
"But I feel things are progressing at the club in the right way. Obviously it might be a little bit slower than people might like,
but the most important thing is to safeguard the future of QPR long-term."
But even without Ndah, we won again: QPR 2 Tranmere 1 (Steiner and Peacock)
RANGERS BACK ON TRACK
RANGERS returned to winning ways when they battled to a much needed three points over lowly Tranmere.
After three games on the trot without a goal, the home side were given the perfect start when Rob Steiner put the R's in front after only two minutes.
Midfielder, Gavin Peacock, saw his chip parried by Rovers keeper, Achterberg, but Swedish striker, Steiner, was on hand to nod the ball home.
From there, Rangers controlled the game and were content to keep possession as the visitors rarley threatened to make the breakthrough.
At times, it was perhaps a shade too comfortable for Gerry Francis' men as they were rarely stretched by their opponent's attack.
Five minutes before half-time, Rangers did force the ball home for a second time.
But Chris Kiwomya was ruled offside after he had converted Jermaine Darlington's clever cross into the penalty area.
If the R's thought the second half was going to be a stroll, they were given a stern reminder in the 54th minute when Tranmere equalised.
The ball was swung into the Rangers' box by Mahon, and Clint Hill rose highest to power the ball past Lee Harper in the home goal.
Soon after, the R's were dealt a blow when Harper was forced to leave the field to be replaced by Ademole Bankole, making his first competitive appearance in a Rangers jersey.
In the 63rd minute Rangers grabbed the winner after a scramble in the penalty box.
Baraclough whipped in a free-kick, Ready flicked on, and after Steiner and Kiwomya failed to connect, Peacock crashed the ball home.
Rangers had another goal ruled out for offside two minutes from time when Rob Steiner was denied by the linesman's flag.
The win was a welcome one for Gerry Francis and his team and propels his side up the table.
