Best was at QPR under Ian Holloway in 2004/2005. A Mel Johnson find for QPR!QPR Official Site - December 17, 2004ONLY THE BEST FOR RANGERS Posted on: Fri 17 Dec 2004 Ian Holloway's plea for a loan striker has finally been answered with the signing of Southampton's Leon Best. The 18-year-old striker has signed on a one month loan deal which will see him at Loftus Road until January 14th for the visit of Stoke City. Best was part of the victorious Saints side that defeated Joe Gallen's under 18's last week and he capped the victory by scoring the visitors third and final goal in their 3-1 win. Chief Scout Mel Johnson had seen Best in action a number of times before the FA Youth Cup tie and Ian Holloway made reference to a Southampton player he had been tracking at the recent Fans Forum. Best, who is eligible to play in the FA Cup, put pen to paper at Twyford Avenue this morning where he met up with Ollie and the players for the first time. Speaking on his move to Rangers, he told QPR World: "I first found out about QPR's interest in me about three weeks ago. Steve Wigley was in charge then and he wasn't keen on letting me go. "But when Harry Redknapp came in he said it would be a good idea for me to go out for a month." Best also told the Rangers fans what they can expect from him. "I like to hold the ball up and run at defenders and of course score goals. Coming here and hopefully playing first team football is the next step for me and I'll be looking to score some goals." Mel Johnson certainly thinks that Best will be able to achieve this and has been impressed by the youngster so far. "We've signed him because he's a very good, young player. He's a good size and he scores goals, he's young and athletic." Rangers are also pleased to announce that Aaron Brown has signed on a non contract basis.
