Cardiff City forced to remove sponsors' name by Gambling Commission
Sep 16 2009 Terry Phillips
CARDIFF City wore shirts without a sponsors logo at Reading tonight after the Gambling Commission asked them to remove the name of internet betting company 777ball.
The Bluebirds were asked before leaving for Reading and took a yellow away kit which did not bear the 777ball logo.
“There is no comeback for Cardiff City,” said a club spokesman. “The Gambling Commission notified us that the sponsor, 777ball, need a licence enabling them to advertise their services within the European Economic Area.
“We agreed to take the logo off for the match at Reading and now we wait for things to be sorted out. It seems unlikely that will happen before Saturday’s home match against Queens Park Rangers, but there is no danger with the sponsorship and the 777ball logo will be back on the shirts as soon as their licence is granted.”
An official statement was issued by Cardiff City just before tonight’s Coca-Cola Championship match against Reading at the Madejski Stadium.
It read: “Following advice from the Gambling Commission, Cardiff City removed the sponsor’s logo from their shirts for tonight’s match.
“The Gambling Commission informed us the sponsor, 777ball, should obtain a licence enabling them to advertise their services within the European Economic Area.
“At the moment, 777ball hold a licence issued in the Phillipines where they are based.
“Cardiff City went ahead with the sponsorship in good faith after discussions with the Football League. The Gambling Commission will meet representatives of 777ball next week and we are grateful to the Commission for their efforts to resolve the matter.
“In the meantime, 777ball have expressed their determination to act correctly over the sponsorship and will be applying for the appropriate licence.
