Blackpool Gazette/Steve Canavan - Ollie wants all-out attack
IAN Holloway will spend next week hammering home the way he wants his team to play – on the front foot.
The manager is keen for Pool to adopt an attacking style of play, whether home or away, and for the full 90 minutes.
Four draws and a victory in the opening five league games, plus two Carling Cup successes, suggest Holloway's policy is paying off.
And with a full week of training to come next week, the manager will be hoping he can further improve his squad's performances.
"I want us to keep going forward all the time no matter what the score in a game," said Holloway.
"We did it against Wigan the other week and I want us to continue doing that.
"I think the best form of defence is how well you attack.
"Hopefully the lads are getting to grips with running off the ball when we play this shape.
"Not many people in England are used to playing the way we are but if you look at all the top clubs, you'll see they're doing it. They've all changed.
"Sir Alex Ferguson got battered a few years ago about playing a front three and look at United now? If you look around the teams in Europe you've got to be able to adapt and my lads at the moment are adapting."
Holloway has changed his working habits since an unhappy spell at Leicester, his last management job.
Squeeze
He spent a year out of football taking in games and deciding that if he ever got back into football, he would get his team playing in a different manner.
"I got the inspiration from all the football I watched last year during my time out of the game," added Holloway.
"I watched Roberto Martinez for a couple of years and looked at what he did at Swansea.
"I just got very bored and tired of 4-4-2 – squeeze across, smash it and win the knockdowns. It is like a fight all the time.
"I'd rather keep the ball – for example, if you look at our goalkicks we are trying to spread out. The goalie can hit anywhere he likes across the whole width of the pitch.
"He has got to get that right because he hasn't got them all right yet.
"But it will come and hopefully the lads are enjoying it.
"That's important because at the end of the day if you enjoy your work, then surely you become better at it. That's what the lads are doing here.
"Well done to them because they are doing all the hard work.
"Whoever I pick they have done me proud so what more can you ask."
Holloway added: "I just thoroughly enjoy watching my team at the minute. I'm enjoying working with them but I am enjoying watching them and that is the nice thing.
"It is delightful to be back and to have the chance to restart my career. That is what I am doing."
The manager and the players are off until Monday to enable them to recharge their batteries after a frantic start to the season which saw the Seasiders play seven games in the space of three weeks.
The games come thick and fast when they return. Starting with next Saturday's trip to Leicester, Holloway's men must play another seven games in the space of 21 days
