RIP Yeovil Town legend - Tuesday 25th November 2008
Soomerset County Gazette - By Steve Sowden »
THE last remaining member of the famous Yeovil Town giant-killing team of 1948-49 has sadly died (writes Steve Sowden).
Victor ‘Dickie’ Dyke passed away at the age of 84 on Sunday.
Goalkeeper Dickie was plucked from the Yeovil reserves in January 1949 to play a starring role in the Glovers’ 2-1 FA Cup Fourth Round victory over the mighty Sunderland — the club’s most famous giant-killing act of all time.
With regular first-team keeper Stan Hall ruled out injured, player-boss Alec Stock called on the young solicitor’s clerk to take over between the posts.
And Dickie had a blinder...and his place in Huish folklore was cemented.
His death comes as the club prepares to commemorate the 60th anniversary of that memorable 1948-49 season which helped to book Yeovil’s place in football history as the most feared of all cup giant-killing teams.
I had the pleasure of meeting Dickie several years ago at his home in Bridgwater while I was working on the Express’ sister paper, the Bridgwater Mercury, and he was a gentleman through and through and very modest about his part in the historic win over Sunderland.
But there was no doubting his pride when he unveiled his scrapbooks containing all the immaculate press cuttings he had saved from his finest hour against the North East giants.
His death on Sunday in Bournemouth, ironically, came just a few days after Yeovil had fallen out of this year’s FA Cup competition in a 5-0 drubbing at Stockport County.
