Can still see him playing, dominating the action in 40s. He lives on in my memory and made the war years easier for this fan. God rest his soul.

Former Carlisle United boss dies aged 96 Published at 12:15, Wednesday, 07 November 2012 www.newsandstar.co.uk/carlisle-united/latest/1.1011798#LEGENDARY former Carlisle United manager Ivor Powell, who has died aged 96, was “a great motivator and competitor†according to the captain he brought to Brunton Park. Peter McConnell today paid a warm tribute to Welshman Powell – the man who led Carlisle to their first-ever promotion in 1962 – who passed away on Monday night after a short illness. Former half-back McConnell said: “I’m really sad about the news. Ivor was a good motivator and a real character. A former Wales international and close friend of Sir Stanley Matthews, who was the best man at Powell’s wedding, he set a record transfer fee for a half-back when he moved from QPR to Aston Villa in 1948. He was replaced by Alan Ashman as United manager after an FA Cup defeat to Gravesend in 1963. But McConnell said he laid the foundations for much of the success United went on to enjoy.

Although upon reflection, 4 years short of a Century. A shame. Someone whom gave so much to football, deserved to see a century.
