QPR appoint Director of Performance
QPR are delighted to announce the appointment of Ben Williams as the club’s new Director of Performance, overseeing the club’s sports science, medical, physio and nutritional departments.
Williams joins the R’s backroom staff from renowned cycling team, INEOS Grenadiers and British Americas Cup Challenger, INEOS Britannia, where he spent nine years working across several positions, most recently as Head of Performance Support & Innovation and Head of Human Performance.
Williams said: "I am very excited about this new role and developing a culture of collaboration, integration and innovation throughout the club that truly impacts performance. Our aim is to build a unified system that utilises the knowledge and experience within the whole club, not just within departments or teams.
“A large part of my career has been about integrated performance. It’s something I am very passionate about.
“My previous roles have focused on the integration of teams and the multi-disciplinary modelling of gap analysis so we can truly understand what is required from us as an organisation, and strategically plan to meet the demands of the event.”
Williams believes his time in football – he consulted last season with Ligue 1 French outfit OGC Nice – could prove advantageous in his new role with the R’s.
“Football is the sixth sport I have worked in, and I believe coming from a different background and a different belief system will allow me to look at the organisation from a different perspective,” he said.
Having worked with some of the biggest names in sport whilst with INEOS, Williams will be looking to instil some of those important qualities he has developed.
“It has been a very big decision to switch from INEOS,” he said. “I feel it’s the right time in my career. I have been developed and mentored by some of the titans of sports performance and will look to use all those experiences and learnings here at QPR.”
Williams says his first job with QPR is to get to know what the club and its people are about.
“I want to take my time to understand the culture here at QPR, understand the reasons why things are done and the people and processes that underpin performance - then identify areas in which we can improve,” he explained.
“My responsibility is to develop a thriving performance department that gets the best from our athletes. I won’t take the role lightly.”
With pre-season already under way, Williams is eager to meet everyone and start the learning process.
“I am really looking forward to working alongside Gareth (Ainsworth) who has a lot of energy and passion for this club as well as exploring our fantastic new home at Heston,” he said.
R’s boss Ainsworth is delighted with the arrival of Williams. The R’s chief explained: “I believe Ben will make a huge difference with performance altogether.
“He is a great character, a real leader and he comes with a fantastic background of success.
“It’s going to be a slightly smaller squad this season so keeping everyone fit, as we’ve seen from previous seasons, is going to be even more important this year.
“Ben and the great staff we have here already will give me every chance of getting the best XI out on the pitch on a match day and that’s what it’s all about.”
QPR CEO Lee Hoos explained the reasons behind the arrival of a Director of Performance, commenting: “As a collective, the board, Les (Ferdinand), Gareth and I took a really deep dive into what we were lacking last year.
“We’ve had a couple of audits conducted from sports-science specialists and one come in from an organisational-effectiveness perspective as well.
“Everything pointed to the fact we have really good people here, but there’s a piece missing in terms of making sure it’s all joined up.
“That’s what Ben has come in to do.”
Once the club identified the role that needed filling, the board, Hoos, Ferdinand and Ainsworth worked closely to identify the most suitable candidate.
“We were looking for somebody specifically with a performance-led background to tie everything together - and Ben was the outstanding candidate,” Hoos said.
“He’s got a very impressive background in football and non-football, which can be very beneficial.
“He’s very progressive in how he wants to do things and his attention to detail is unbelievable.”
