After yesterday's rumours and guesses. Official (as in West London Sport reporting) www.westlondonsport.com/qpr/ferdinand-leaving-role-as-qpr-director-of-footballFerdinand leaving role as QPR director of football By David McIntyre 16/06/2023 Les Ferdinand is leaving his role as QPR director of football. The former R’s and England striker, 56, returned to Loftus Road in October 2015 when he was placed in charge of football operations. Regarded as one of QPR’s greatest-ever players, Ferdinand has been revered by fans since his playing days – but has faced growing criticism from them during the past few years. That criticism intensified during a miserable season in which Michael Beale walked out after 21 games as head coach, his successor Neil Critchley was axed after just 12 at the helm, and the club were almost relegated to League One after a dire run of results. Ferdinand impressed the QPR hierarchy as Rangers wrestled with restrictions caused by Financial Fair Play rules and sought to balance the books after years of overspending. But there were tensions, particularly over some managerial appointments and some of the club’s transfer dealings. More to follow. [Updated/Added line "And, following discussions with current head coach Gareth Ainsworth about transfer targets for the coming season, Ferdinand decided to stand down."

Probably like most of us; think it's probably way past time. And needed. And quite a few issues there. And we remember why Tony Fernandes appointed him But do regret all the often-vitriolic anti-Ferdinand tweets out there As I tweeted a couple of months ago

And I guess the last point. A) Who will come in? Will it be Warburton. And 2)Will anyone else replace him

And now on QPR Official Site www.qpr.co.uk/news/club-news/les-ferdinand-steps-down-160123/Les Ferdinand steps down LES Ferdinand has stepped down from his role as Director of Football at QPR after more than eight years at the club. Ferdinand initially returned to Loftus Road in October 2014 as Head of Football Operations before moving into his current role in February 2015. Ferdinand said: “This has not been an easy decision. My life is football, I love football and I want to stay in football but I do feel this is the right time for me to step down from my position here. “Everyone knows how special Queens Park Rangers is to me and it has been a privilege to be back at the club. “There have been challenging times and I have had to make some very difficult decisions but every decision I have made has been with the best interests of the club at heart. “I would like to thank the owners whose commitment to this club is incredible. They have such a strong desire to give QPR fans the club they deserve and I will be their biggest supporter as they look to achieve it. “I also want to thank the fans. I know it has been difficult for them recently but their passion is what makes them so special. If you want to know what support means, look at our last home game. After a tough year, they gave us our biggest attendance of the season. That says everything about the QPR fans. “This is the club that gave me my chance in football. It will always mean so much to me and I wish the R’s every success in the future.” Speaking on behalf of the board, chairman Amit Bhatia said: “I wish to thank Les for his guidance, leadership, determination and friendship over the years. “This club means so much to him and I have seen that first-hand. “In an industry where individuals with genuine authenticity and integrity appear to be scarce, Les's sincerity and honesty have always set him apart, and have made him so special and so valued by the board. “QPR is Les’s club and he will always be welcome back with open arms at Loftus Road.” CEO Lee Hoos added: “Les’s knowledge of the club and his contacts within the game have been hugely beneficial to us. “I am enormously grateful to him for all his assistance and support, and thank him wholeheartedly. He is a first-rate man.” Ferdinand will be in attendance at the opening ceremony of the club’s new training ground next week as a guest of the board.

It's difficult to be hard on Ferdinand.... because he's Sir Les and a legend... but we do need a good shake of the tree. To many staff have had along time here but achieved very little.

Great news, shut the door behind you. The door was shut a week ago! Amazing and sad the fans who are so vocal and cheering when we lose experienced people like Sir Les and Johansen but never offer a suggestion of who can do better or offer a word of thanks for the work these people have put in. No one stays forever and as times change so we must move on - that's life. But do not erase or forget history in the process. So with the door shut, to some peoples pleasure, will anyone be coming in through it and if so, who and why?. Maybe best to leave all the doors shut and at least the moaners can have their day and complain that we have not replaced anyone.

Unbelievable. Seems pathetic and a waste of money to out source this. Maybe we should just leave the job vacant until January as by the time we get someone this way it will be half way through the season anyway. This is a job that we should have filled quickly to have input during the window, or not fill it at all. Where is Hoos in all this and does this spell the end of him? On one side if we are outsourcing the job search we must (should) have a good idea of what we want because the recruitment people will want a job and profile spec. On the other hand it seems that we have not been approached or found anyone to fit the bill at the salary on offer. So was Sir Les's departure a total shock - you would think we would have been looking around if he had made his possible departure known. Big question is who have we outsourced this too - a football agent or are there specialist football managerial head hunters - not to my knowledge.

Big question is who have we outsourced this too - a football agent or are there specialist football managerial head hunters - not to my knowledge. The recruitment process is being managed by American firm Retexo Intelligence, who have worked with a number of clubs, including Real Madrid, Paris St-Germain, Barcelona and Roma. Retexo have made contact with several contenders for the role with a view to drawing up a shortlist. The final decision on an appointment will be made by QPR’s majority shareholder Ruben Gnanalingam. But Retexo are heavily involved in the vetting process, using data to analyse the merits of each candidate. The company also advises clubs on potential takeovers and improving academies as well the buying and selling of players.

Which leads me to my next question and why I originally said "unbelievable". I know from experience that these sorts of people do not come cheap so how much are we spending to outsource recruiting a new DOF and would that money be better put to use on paying some wages or even a transfer fee. Unless they find an unemployed candidate this process is not likely to see a new man in place before September 1st so will have no impact in the immediate future and this important window.

Probably a long term investment, worth spending the money to get the right person who can identify players and opportunities over the coming years to try and increase our selling opportunities. You're right, not good for what we need now hence we are going after freebies that GA seems to be identifying.

You're right, not good for what we need now hence we are going after freebies that GA seems to be identifying. Seems right but I would love to see the job description for our DOF, especially as it relates to player recruitment. I would expect the role to actually identify players is really down to our scouts although a DOF with contacts and good knowledge of football home and abroad could contribute much in that respect as well. I have always assumed, maybe wrongly, that the DOF gets more involved firstly in agreeing (or not) with recommendations and then in contacting clubs and players, handling negotiations on transfer fees and wages and getting signings over the line. Obviously it has to be a team approach with Hoos, the DOF manager coaches and scouts all involved but it has always been a grey area in my mind as to whether one person (and who) has the final say or decisions are taken on a majority opinion. Reading between the lines in some reports and interviews about Sir Les leaving there are hints that Ainsworth put his foot down on wanting to chose his own target signings and Sir Les's role would be weakened. There were hints that the same conflicts appeared with Warburton but in that case it was Warburton who left. I agree the DOF should be a long term role to give the continuity in the clubs direction while coaches or managers come and go. So I hope we come up with the right man for the job and that he/she can keep the balance with whoever is our coach. My only worry at the moment is that if Ainsworth, without a DOF, has a pretty free hand in choosing players on contracts of some length we could see another couple of windows of many changes if the new DOF sets a different direction for the manager, or decides to change manager if the 2 are incompatible.
