So, as we get to the end of the first quarter of the season, how do other posters on this board view our progress?
For me, it has been a very good start, we have lost when we should have won, found a victory when not playing at our best, had some luck and some bad luck – so 6th seems a fair reflection and is remarkable progress considering some of the budgets of other clubs.
Bournemouth, Fulham, WBA and Stoke look to be the better teams with Sheffield United the only relegated team not to be up there. Great to see Coventry doing a Barnsley this season and giving us all hope. Relegation already heavily influenced by non-footballing issues, and although a sad reflection on our times, punishment has to be sucked up, as we well know. Reading and Derby likely to be hit soon.
Regarding our squad, the Summer business is looking every bit as good as first thought. Andre Gray is a frustrating watch, but he gives us something else up front, and options to change the game. Three quality strikers – wow!
Great to see the relationship between Seny and the crowd yesterday as he acknowledged his chant, he is a class act the way he controls his area and been a little unlucky lately, but he clearly beats himself up for any lapse. Our best keeper for a long while.
Dunne is a great find and another one off the production line to future posterity. He got caught out yesterday, but he really is another no nonsense, solid defender. Wallace and McCallum look to have solved the left back worry, how unlucky that they are both currently out injured, but right back / right wing back is still a weakness for me – and the biggest concern. Individual defensive errors and the ball over the top, the other homework task for our defenders.
In midfield, Johansen while not quite hitting the heights of last season, really looks a class act and a worthy captain. He is still not fully fit, and I was surprised he started yesterday. Dukes-McKenna has also impressed me and I think he will overtake Thomas in replacing Chair when he inevitably moves on. Great to see Amos back and getting up to speed and Dozzell provides good cover. Special mention for Ball who gives 100% every time, being asked to play far more due to Field’s injury.
But Willock and Chair have progressed a long way in 2021. I was only thinking yesterday just how confident they are and a tremendous combination adding to a really impressive team spirit. It is so good to see players mature like that and fulfil their potential. It is wonderful that we are a club that can do that for players and attract talent accordingly.
I have only made it to watch QPR live three times so far this season, having to settle for computer feeds and Sky instead, but it was so good yesterday to hear that great atmosphere at the ground and watching the team’s never say die approach to the task.
We may not make it to promotion this season, and part of me wants to enjoy how good we are rather than be Norwich next season, but I am more than happy with where we sit today. After the break, the fixture congestion is crazy, but how nice that we are still in a cup for a change, so just enjoy the ride I guess.
So many bad times, love the QPR good times….
