www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/local-sport/motherwells-liam-kelly-shocked-players-24134949Kelly named Motherwell's players' player of the year. I was not very impressed when he was playing in our first team, but he must be talented. He clearly will want to keep playing first team football, but with Lumley likely to be offered more money elsewhere, unless Dieng is sold, then apart from during the Africas Cup next January, he will only be a bench warmer. So from having 4 keepers (Dieng, Lumley, Kelly and Barnes) we could be looking for a back up keeper to whoever is number one next year. Seems Walsh will be loaned out.

www.westlondonsport.com/qpr/football-qpr-keeper-lumley-set-for-move-meaning-kelly-could-be-needed-as-coverNot surprised by this and if it happens soon we know a bit more about where we stand. If we manage to keep Dieng, which I think we will, I am not sure we should drag Kelly back from Scotland to sit on the bench. He would only really be needed in the event of a long term injury or drastic loss of form by Dieng. On a game to game basis having Barnes as cover on the bench, plus the possibility for an emergency loan signing if Dieng gets injured we are still covered. If we drag Kelly back we are creating a problem by forcing a player who wants to be playing every week in Scotland to be a bench warmer.

Now Lumley has gone and if Kelly does not want to come back an alternative to leaving a young keeper on the bench we could try to pick up and experienced ageing keeper nearing then of his playing days for a season and let the young ones go on loan for a season.

Getting a little clearer. Barnes has been retained for another season, but keepers Brzozowski and Dickinson released. So, 3 keepers gone, I think we intend to keep Seny with Barnes on the bench and Walsh out on loan until January. I think Kelly will now depart for an undisclosed fee.

Any suggestions? Ray Drinkwater or Mike Pinner would be ok and very cheap but I think both are past it now

Good move for all concerned imo. Now we just need to recover our cash paid for Kelly from Motherwell and use it on a wing back preferably a free and just pay his wages with the Kelly cash.

QPR looking to bring in keeper and let Kelly leave www.westlondonsport.com/qpr/football-qpr-liam-kelly-move-250521By David McIntyre 25/05/2021 QPR are looking to bring in a new goalkeeper and allow Liam Kelly to leave. Kelly, 25, spent the second half of last season on loan at Motherwell, who are keen to sign him on a permanent deal. Rangers initially planned for Kelly to return as cover for Seny Dieng following Joe Lumley’s recent departure. The out-of-contract Lumley rejected a new deal in order to sign for Middlesbrough. But Kelly has made it clear he does not want to go back to QPR to sit on the bench. Another loan move for Kelly, who has two years left on his contract, would simply involve Rangers paying his wages in order for him to play elsewhere. That is not an attractive option given that youngster Joe Walsh is likely to go out on loan next season and Dillon Barnes might also be loaned out. It has therefore been decided that Kelly can go for a small transfer fee if another back-up keeper is signed. A number of options are being considered, including Andy Lonergan, although reports the 37-year-old is on the verge of signing for the club are premature. Rangers are still discussing whether to bring in a younger keeper as a potential stand-in or opt for experience. The Ward connection Lonergan is approaching the end of a short-term contract at West Brom, where he has not played. The season before last he had spells as back-up keeper at Liverpool and Stoke without making a league appearance. He had one outing for Stoke in the Carabao Cup. He is well known to QPR goalkeeping coach Gavin Ward, who had a two-year stay at Preston as a player during Lonergan’s 11 years at the Lancashire club. Ward was largely responsible for Barnes’ surprise move to west London in 2019. Barnes has not made an appearance for Rangers but was recently given a new one-year contract. Last season he had spells on loan at Hibernian and Burton Albion. There have so far been no enquiries about Dieng despite speculation about his future resulting from his performances since leapfrogging both Lumley and Kelly to become first-choice keeper. The current expectation is that Dieng will be at QPR next season – and that has added to Kelly’s reluctance to return. Motherwell are favourites to sign Kelly but other Scottish clubs have been made aware of his potential availability. He was signed from Livingston for £50,000 on a four-year deal in 2019 but has managed just 19 Championship appearances.

Dillon Barnes recent call up with Jamaica could add another complication because Jamaica have friendly matches early next month and the Concacaf Gold Cup competition in July plus Jamaican World Cup Qualifiers start in September.

Here's hoping he starts and plays well. Jamaica are no slouch and this may enable the Rs to view him as a back up for Seny. It would also boost his value significantly.

I don't see the point of giving Barnes a new contract and then loaning him out: he is either good enough to be our bench warmer or not. If he is, don't loan him out. If he isn't he should not have got a new contract.

If he isn't he should not have got a new contract. Dieng went out on loan for more than 2 years. That turned him into our best keeper. I assume the club is thinking along the same lines in regards to Barnes, but it does require us to sign another keeper as a bench warmer and Cup games keeper.

The following has been reported on Twitter...... QPR News @qprnews82 Liam Kelly joined Motherwell for around £336k could rise to £500k #QPR
On the one hand, it is hard to think that Motherwell paid that much, but on the other hand, he only just missed out on the Euro Scotland squad. I would have thought lower, but with a substantial sell on. But as we only paid £50k, he was not a bad buy, just a tad unlucky that Seny came through so well. I hope he does well, moves to a bigger club, plays for Scotland and we receive several sell-ons!

I wonder how many games Matt Ingram sat out or Brain Murphy. Or when we had two international keepers and Rob Green sat it out. But I think losing Seny was the biggest factor in our demise, he commands his area, stops goals and sets up the attacks. I hope we have him next season. Sell Dickie or Chair, but keep Seny please.

I wonder what Beale will make of our goalkeeping set-up and options. Perhaps we will even get a new goalkeeping coach. But last season was beyond belief - for so many seasons, back-up keepers only get a run out in cups, but we not only selected them, we crocked them as well. See above we had eight named in our squad. But looking forward, so much depends on whether we can hold on to Seny. We have to sell someone this window and I think that he will generate the most interest - although possibly not the most dosh. Keepers are so important, but sales rarely reflect their relative value to a team. Crystal Palace, Middlesboro, WBA and Notts Forest are all looking for a first choice keeper. It looks like Palace will sign Johnstone on a free though. We have lost Marshall, Westwood and Barnes. We still have five remaining of the eight. Archer does not inspire confidence and Walsh was injured just at the wrong time (weren't they all?). I suspect that he will be loaned out if possible. We were said to be interested in the tall Lincoln keeper (Jordan Wright) - the irony being that he is ex-Forest (isn't everyone?). But I think that if Seny leaves, we will need another keeper to add to our growing list. Any thoughts?

MURPHY Mahoney has agreed a new two-year deal at QPR which will keep him at Loftus Road until 2024.
The 20-year-old goalkeeper has been with the club since the age of ten and he enjoyed a breakthrough season during 2021/22 when he made his first-team debut at Preston in April.

Wow, what an absolute howler Lumley had for Reading yesterday. The defence hardly helped him Even Conor Washington scored a worldy against him. Think he may well be dropped for the midweek game.
