Shopping at the January Sales.
The January transfer window is said to be a bad place to buy. The wise cash is said to be spent in the Summer.
We spent quite a bit then, most is yet to come to fruition with Dickie the pick of the crop and Dieng making a belated return home for his debut.
I had high hopes for Thomas and Willock, neither have had much game time, so perhaps they will still get there. Dykes and Bonne have not delivered so far.
But there have been some good lower league players picked up by other Championship clubs this window (Ben Whiteman, Perry Ng, Harry Pickering, Max Watters to name but 4) and we do not seem to be able to compete, or we are disinterested in that market. Instead, the decision has been taken to go after a few more, wise old heads.
However, we do seem to be struggling to compete in even Poundland right now.
We have acquired Jordy de Wijs (pronounced ‘vice’) who I see as another Barbet - can be very good but accident prone. Jordy has been out injured since before Christmas having lost his place in the team earlier in the season.
Charlie Austin has joined – who only managed 5 substitute appearances prior to joining. He will have been expensive – possibly consuming the available budget.
We are said to be keen on Alex Pritchard (a regular Huddersfield sick note who was once good) and Ryan Tunnicliffe (cannot get in the Luton team).
Of the younger interests, Josh Sims (Southampton) is currently injured and Alfie Doughty (Charlton) is injured and not available to play for this season.
So, we only seem to be able to attract players who have something to prove or are currently injured.
I was disappointed when we missed out on Whiteman and we appear to have bid real money. So, I hope that we still have something in the kitty to bid for a decent left wing back and a box to box midfielder. Perhaps the above wise old names will just be squad player, to add potential bodies in the hope that one will prove to be a bargain. But players who cannot get into Hull’s starting eleven or even in the Luton squad, do not fill me with much confidence. Pritchard, Tunnicliffe and De Wijs are all boo boys for their current teams. It does not bode well.
Less than 2 weeks to go, a couple of good signings could really make a difference, but no sign at the moment.
