BELLINGHAM ON HIS WAY TO DORTMUND?
Birmingham wonderkid Jude Bellingham is set to join the Borussia Dortmund revolution as the club's record signing, according to reports in Germany.
Dortmund have beaten off competition from Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea to lure the 16-year-old to the Bundesliga, German outlet Sport Bild claim.
They report a fee of around €35million (£30.5m) has been agreed with the Championship club and will be completed once the summer window opens. Bellingham has scored three goals and provided three assists in 31 league matches for the Blues this term. SkySports News

I thought that regulations had been brought in that limited fees for players under 18.
I also thought that under 18's can't sign a professional contract.
Am I wrong?

I thought that regulations had been brought in that limited fees for players under 18. I also thought that under 18's can't sign a professional contract. Am I wrong? Players can sign a pro deal at 17 in England, younger than quite a few other countries, though it rarely happens. That can only happen for Bellingham in June 2020. I'm not 100% sure but if the 'limited fees' part refers to a tribunal, that only comes into play when a young player has reached the end of their scholarship deal. At that time, they're technically free of obligation to their parent club, but the tribunal is supposed to ensure that the club who developed the kid gets adequate compensation for their effort. It's supposed to make sure clubs aren't disincentivised from developing kids and have big clubs swoop in and nick them before they sign pro forms, though understand that EPPP has nobbled that for a number of clubs (hence why Brentford closed their academy). Bellingham is on a scholarship deal with Brum until July 2021, so it wouldn't go to tribunal and he'd have a market value. I think the numbers flying around are a bit of a misnomer - my guess is they'd pay a far smaller amount up front and load it up with conditional payments - e.g. releasing more millions if he plays X competitive games, if Dortmund win a cup etc. What I can't seem to see is what age you can sign a pro contract in Germany. If he went to Dortmund, would he be on an academy deal (I think top German clubs have obligatory academy setups), but presumably they wouldn't put that kind of money down unless they could tie him down on a longer term deal? Maybe there's a pre pro contract agreement? Maybe the initial deal would just bring him into Dortmund's academy (with the opportunity to play first team football) and if he wants away before signing a pro deal, the arrangements on future payments made to Brum transfer over to whatever club then takes him..? Makes my head hurt.

Thanks bow.
I think I'm clearer now, but I refuse to take a test on it!
To the question of what Eze is worth in comparison to Bellingham, I wouldn't have a clue. I think it is clear that at the age of 16, Bellingham is far in advance of what Eze was at that age, but whether he will be a better player at 21 is very open to debate. It seems a lot of money to spend on potential, but I assume that Dortmund have a good record of spotting young players & converting the potential to reality.
I would definitely trust his future to Dortmund rather than an English club!
