Think that last sentence is the key to so many players these days..! Still baffles me.

Goss' last loan was to St Johnstone in the Scottish Prem. Just like when he was a Rangers, he began the loan by being included in the starting line up, then became a player who came off the bench getting some minutes playing time and ended up a bench-warmer. If he couldn't get playing time in a mid table Scottish Prem team he's got no hope of playing for us.
Another failed signing who's level is at League 1 or 2 who will stick around until the end of his contract going out on loans to get some of his salary off the books. Alternatively he may do a SWP and refuse to go out on loan and draw a Championship salary playing for the U23s or not playing at all!

I think thats it on the defence, I cant see us wanting any more now. The striker option is looking like the most likely areas to strengthen now. Sounds like Smith is off to Millwall so I would expect at least one loan if not 2 to come in with the aim to give us goals.

I've only just caught up on this thread after the recent postings! I was expecting Dieng to be our numnber one this season, but it would appear doubtful that he will still be with the club. I like Lumley & wanted him in the side at the start of last season, but (using that word again!) I don' think that he improved too much as the season developed. If Dieng does leave, I feel that we might be in the market for a 'keeper even though this is by no means a priority position for us. However, I've seen two play off finals this weekend & at least three of the goalkeepers looked more dominant than Joe. Day at Newport in particular looked good & is likely to be available at a reasonable price. Moving on to our defence, I think we are short of numbers. Furlong, Kakay, Rangel (?), Leistner, Hall, Phillips (I know nothing about him) & Manning (left back is his best position) look to me to need some help! Is the Blackpool defender we were associated with last year still available? Steve can't turn him down now! On the assumption that we play 4-2-3-1, Luongo & Scowen are more than good enough for the two central positions, but where is any cover for them apart from Hall? I think we need to give them some competition for their places. I have no problem with the three in front of them! BOS, Symth, Eze, Chair & Shodipo may be lacking in experience & age, but they will offer us some skill, pace & directness that we will need. Now to the main problem area! I don't really see either Smith or Oteh holding the ball up well enough to play as a lone forward. In fact, I think Wheeler may be more adept to that role! We need at least two new players for our attacking positions although I offer no names for consideration as to who we should target! Hopefully Warburton, Ferdinand, Eustace & Penrice will know who is right & afordable for us! In summary, that leaves me wanting a goalkeeper, full back, central defender, midfielder & two forwards for the price of what we manage to sell Freeman for! That's not much to ask for & what could be easier? I asked for six new players & we have already signed three in the positions I wanted! Just one midfielder & two forwards to go! I'm quite pleased with our business so far.

Lots of message board rumours as to who will sign in the next 2 weeks following Warburton's appearance on Sky. Matt Smith - defensive midfielder from Man. City (Loan) Scott Hogan - striker from Villa (loan) Chuks Aneke - striker from MK Dons (Free agent) Angel Rangel - Right Back (free agent) Against that, it seems that our current Matt Smith does not fit in with the manager's plans and is off to Millwall. I am sure as soon as we dump him on the floor a penalty will be awarded against us - after seeing him butchered for the last 2 seasons for no reward! Freeman likely to depart by Monday for just £4m. I guess he must have had a £4m release clause should a Prem club come calling. Otherwise I think we would hang on and see if we could get a bidding war going with Leeds. By today's standards £4m is cheap for his quality and record and in reality the release valuation on an extended contract was better value for the club who would only receive half of that if he has not signed the extension. Sheffield Utd are probably the only Prem tean who would be interested in him. Ingram ofski - but no takers as yet. Meanwhile, Warburton has the squad back in on Monday and pre-season starts early on Monday. All happening early this year - very unlike QPR

I think we rejected a £5m bid last season according to someone on Twitter. If true, then it’s unlikely that we’d accept less now for him. I’ve never particularly been a great fan of our current Matt Smith, I think he makes us too one dimensional, but can’t fault his service to the club since we got him. Not sure how solid the Aneke rumours are, but Dave MacIntyre definitely believes the Hogan one is valid. Interesting times ahead for sure, though.

Agree re: Freeman unless he has a buy out clause in his contract. Also agree re: Smith. I nicknamed him threepenny bit - not rhyming slang but because no one, including him, ever knew in which direction the ball would be coming off his head. Bizarrely he may also be our best shot at finding a 20 goal a season striker if we play to his strengths.

I would be gutted if Freeman went for 4 Million, I think you are spot on, worth at least 6-8 Million, that way I would be gutted but at least thought we got the going rate. Without a doubt is one of the best Midfielders in the Championship.

Give Chair a chance?
Freeman MUST be sold for the good of our overall team and chance of staying up next season given financial position, we need cash to strengthen other areas. Yes a good player but by no means is he a regular match winner and I can’t understand how any fan would want him to stay over us getting in a couple of Centre backs and strikers. We have many options in and around his position who can do just a good a job given then chance - Chair, Eze, BOS

I definitely agree on the likelihood of him needing to be sold but disagree on the individual match winner bit. He dragged us absolutely kicking and screaming almost on his own through some games last season, Leeds at home in Jan in particular but there were plenty of others where he was definitively the difference for us.
Financial reality is that he's one of our most sellable assets and attacking midfielders is one of the few areas where we are blessed with young talent who we need to give a chance to and really, rely on. But I wouldn't act like it wouldn't be a blow - he's fantastic for us and would be a big loss. Least it sounds like Barbet has a good set piece delivery on him.

Assuming that the 1st July will see Rangel and Dieng depart, and Smith and Amos sign, we probably need one more defender and 2 strikers. Perhaps Goss will be loaned out / sold as he will probably be behind Amos and Smith for the holding position (s).

Assuming these are all classed as first team players its a huge squad. It is now a huge squad as you say. New Players (8): Yoaan Barbet , Liam Kelly, Lee Wallace, Luke Amos , Dylan Duncan, Matt Smith , Dominic Ball , Conor Masterson . New Contracts (2): Rangel & Dieng We are said to be interested in signing Josh Cullen, Geoff Cameron and Barrie McKay plus 2 strikers. That would be 15 additions - I can not recall a window quite like this one. However, if you are trying to change the culture a complete clear out and start again is certainly one option. But if 5 more do join (big if!) then that would take the list below up to 37. So are we about to lose 12 from the list below? Are loans or sales already lined up? Under 23s to be removed from the list: 3 - Bettache, Duncan, Dalling If so my exit door guess would be: 7 - Dieng, Kakay, Phillips, Hamalainen, Goss Wheeler & Luongo, Will the other two be Hall & Scowen? Even if all the additions are great signings, they will take a while to settle in and play as a team. Could be a bumpy start to the season, especially if the strikers are to be late arrivals (gulp). Goalkeepers 13. Lumley 26 Dieng 45. Brzozowski ** Kelly Defenders 2. Furlong 22 Rangel 24. Kakay 4. Hall ** Barbet ** Masterson ** Ball 29. Phillips 37. Leistner ** Wallace 28. Hamalainen Midfielders 6. Goss 10. Eze 11. Scowen 14. Manning 19. Chair ** Duncan ** Smith ** Amos 44 Bettache 21. Luongo Wingers / Wide Players 20. Osayi-Samuel 27. Shadipo 38. Smyth 43. Dalling Strikers 18. Oteh 25. Wheeler 34. Walker

It is still too large a squad, but I do query two names on the list.
I'm sure that I read that Duncan had been signed for the under 23 squad & I'm yet to read that Rangel has signed a new contract. It is "only" 30 if those two are removed!
I would expect that the club are hopeful of selling a minimum of two of Lumley, Luongo, Leistner, Goss & Wheeler plus loaning out Bettache, Dalling & Kakay.
EDIT!!!!"
I've now seen that Rangel has signed his new contract! I should have gone into the transfer thread first!

I don’t think our squad is that bad. We have already lost about eight maybe more I missed ?? Gone)Ingram, Matt Smith , Freeman, Bidwell, Wszolek, Lynch, Baptiste, Cousins ....
Possibly going ) Luongo, Goss and Wheeler May well go permanently.....
Many Others will go out on loan.
How many have we brought in so far ?

This has been a hotchpotch of a transfer window to date. However, the first point to note has to be what a good job Lee Hoos has done in the last few seasons getting our finances into order. We've signed far more players than I thought possible and with every indication that we've not finished yet regardless of how bloated the squad already looks.
I think that there are clearly some Warburton signings (such as Kelly, Wallace and Ball), but also some Ferdinand/Penrice ones (such as Masterson, Duncan, Smith and Amos). I'm not sure which category Barbet falls into but if pushed I plump for Penrice.
Rangel is an odd one for me. I've nothing against Rangel, but do we need him and Ball? Perhaps we signed Ball because we'd got vibes off Rangel that he was going elsewhere?
If we do sign Cameron however, that would annoy me. We've already got the two loans for midfield who are presumably intended to be in the starting eleven, adding Cameron to the mix would restrict the opportunities for our own emerging players to get on the pitch. This is not an argument about who is better, it is far more practical than that, we need these players to progress so that we can sell them in the coming seasons - it is the club's only viable business model. Eze has to play, Chair has to play, Osayi-Samuel has to play, and if I don't get to see little Smyth on the pitch from time to time I will have very little patience when we start to struggle.
I agree with Terry about loaning out Bettache, Dalling and Kakay but would add Hamaleinen, Phillips and a keeper to that list enabling us to keep all three goalies with a view to selling one next summer.

If we sign Cameron then it would be to play centre back. That's his natural position where he played 150+ premier league games for Stoke. Although he did well as a defensive midfielder under McLaren, I think we need him at centre back with Leister (who might still leave?) and Berbel. Hall can't be relied upon yet due to injuries, so we still need another solid and reliable player for that position in my view.

I was just trying to name our starting eleven as things currently stand - with the exception of a striker. I'd go with a 4-2-3-1, but even then the only name I could write down with total confidence would be Wallace. I’d expect Smith and Amos to be in it, but after those it could be anyone.
Kelly
Furlong – Leistner – Barbet – Wallace
Smith – Amos
BOS – Eze – Chair
Ronaldo
Those two loans in midfield are now starting to niggle; I want Manning to play.
We have a strong bench from what’s left: Lumley, Masterson, Ball, Manning, Scowen, Shodipo, Oteh(?).
