To merge two threads: Alan Mullery Turns 80 Born November 23, 1941. Not perhaps QPR's most successful manager, although supposedly a really nice person. Appointed in June 1984 to replace Terry Venables, which was obviously a very tough act to follow. Mullery managed QPR for just 17 games games. In December 1984, Chairman Jim Gregory fired Mullery and replaced him with Frank Sibley (after Don Revie's appointment fell through). The Mullery "era" was certainly eventful six months: The period saw QPR's amazing 5-5 draw with Newcastle as QPR came from 0-4 to draw 5-5. It also saw Mullery turn a 6-2 "home" (actually played at Highbury because of QPR's "controversial" Plastic pitch) win versus Partisan Belgrade in the EUFA Cup; followed by a 0-4 loss in the second leg which saw QPR get knocked out of Europe - to never return!. Among the players he signed for QPR were Gary Bannister and John Byrne. And his managership started so well with two wins and 2 draws including a 1-1 draw at Anfield. Mullery played for Fulham, Spurs and Fulham and England and managed Brighton, Charlton, Crystal Palace, and QPR. Mullery FourFourTwo reviewing "Mullery: the autobiography" writes ".... ....After initial success on the south coast, Mullery's managerial career fell into rapid decline, as he was forced to endure the machinations of QPR's tyrannical chairman Jim Gregory,....." [Now that sounds familiar!] Read more: qprreport.proboards.com/thread/585/years-today-docs-gillard-debut#ixzz4QosJXtNwBump: 32 Years ago, couple of days ago: It's Alan Mullery! ..!ORIGINALLY TITLED: QPR Quiz: Happening 25 Years Ago This Week? [Now that sounds familiar!] Wonder how a Gordon Jago-David Pleat partnership would have worked out. Flashback June 20, 1984 ) Chairman Jim Gregory announced the appointment of Alan Mullery as QPR's new manager. Mullery's task wasn't aided by the fact that he was replacing the very popular and brilliant Terry Venables. Mullery wasn't even the first successor. In the summer Gordon Jago had been hired - and then axed a week later! And QPR had tried to hire David Pleat from Luton. Mullery was at QPR for six months and 17 games before being axed (after a 2-0 home win against Stoke). In his six months, saw the departure of Clive Allen and the arrival of Gary Bannister and John Byrne. It saw the great 1-1 draw at Liverpool; an amazing 5-5 comeback against Newcastle at Loftus Road; and the appalling 0-4 collapse to Partisan Belgrade after a 6- 2 "home" win by QPR. Mullery was axed. The initial replacement was hoped to have been ex-Leeds and England Manager, Don Revie. I'll be honest apart from the cup final and promotion much of what happened pre summer of 1989 is a bit of a (happy !) blur, if you know what I mean! Did we rip up the plastic pitch? Sheila Marsden join the staff? Bulstrode? Guiness? See what I mean, it's all just a blur....................................

OK...Think Clive Allen, Terry Fenwick and so nearly, Simon Stainrod!

Something to do with international call ups or something to do with Palace?

OK, 27 [edit] years ago (now last week), Clive Allen, Terry Fenwick and Simon Stainrod were on an England tour of South America...Allen and Fenwick played in all three games. Allen making his England debut...
Stainrod was on the bench....was set to come on. But ended up not. Was on the bench for all three games. And NEVER got to play for England..
And then on his return Allen was sold to Spurs

Spiral was very messy indeed. Spiral took the whole scene far too seriously for me. Like they were all 'hardcore' ravers in their silly army gear whilst the rest of us just wanted a laugh. Raindance (in a field somewhere, usually Cambridge), Orange at the Camden Palais, Sat. night at the Astoria and Sun. morns at Busby's for the Breakfast Club! Seriously happy days - no fighting on the terraces and all partying and doing business together in the evenings - happy days indeed! He never lost his hardcore.................................! (he just got old and now has back pain instead!!)

Mullery could at least point to making some good signings: Bannister, Byrne, Robbie James
