Defender Steven Caulker understands why supporters were âstressedâ during 2-2 draw âŠ
STEVEN Caulker says the players knew they had given the QPR fans a hard time in Saturdayâs 2-2 draw with Stoke City at Loftus Road, with the supporters desperate for the team to avoid defeat after the previous 4-0 loss at Manchester United.
Caulker, who netted Rangersâ first equaliser before Niko Kranjcarâs sensational late free-kick earned a share of the spoils, told http://www.qpr.co.uk: âWe gave our fans a bit of a hard time really.
âI think they were quite stressed, to be honest â and so were we! But we put in a lot of effort to get that result. It was really important for us not to lose and the fans were definitely a helping hand.
âFor us, itâs another point towards safety.â
Stoke led through Mame Diouf before Peter Crouch restored their lead after Caulkerâs header, and the former Cardiff man added: âIt was a real scrap out there. We didnât start well but we showed great spirit to battle back from behind twice.
âWe gave away two sloppy goals from our point of view but I was pleased, and a lot of the boys are pleased, that we showed such character.
âWe didnât show that at Man United or Spurs, so it was important for us to do that, and pick up another point.â
Of his goal â a header at the far post which was helped over the line by Crouchâs attempted clearance â Caulker said: âIâd like to claim it as mine, definitely. Hopefully, thatâs me off the mark now.â
As for the Pottersâ goals, the Râs defender explained: â(Victor) Moses and Crouch were a handful but I thought the first goal was a foul on Rio. With the second, it was sloppy from us. But weâre not pointing fingers at each other, we take that responsibility collectively as a team.â
Thankfully Kranjcar was able to secure a point with his stunning free-kick, and Caulker added: âIt was an unbelievable goal from Niko, and such a relief when it went in. I celebrated like Iâd scored it! The place just erupted and the fans were buzzing.
âNow I just urge the fans to stick with us. We are a new team and weâre gelling together, but donât doubt us. We have got a lot of spirit in the dressing room and weâre confident weâre going to stay up this year.
âHopefully we can build on this now and put in a strong performance at Southampton this weekend.â
