I'll be honest I wanted Coppell, Warnock or Curbishley. I never wanted De Canio back or us to take the risk on somebody like Maldini but I didn't expect us to settle for Magilton but the more I think of it the more pleased I am with his appointment.
We never looked likely to attract a big name like Scolari or Ranieri and even the lesser managers like Keane and Pardew weren't interested in the job with the revolving door. So we've found ourselves having to appoint a manager like Magiliton. I believe now we will use this appointment as a way of proving to the football world that we can back and trust a manager and that we aren't run by idiots. It's going to take a lot of work but Briatore must have learnt some valuable lessons.
By appointing Magilton we've appointed a manager who plays good football, knows how to win matches away from home (something for years we've struggled to do), scores goals, is tricky to beat, speaks English, knows the opposition, won't have favourites amongst the squad (we have no NI or ex-Ipswich players) and won't have full control of the purse strings. I want a manager who tells our sporting director who to buy but not one who wastes money. For once I think the Paladini/Manager partnership could work. If you read any Ipswich forum they all say that Jim shouldn't be fully trusted in the transfer market.
People may go and ask for a refund, we may find our attendances much lower in August then in 2008 but as soon as we start winning the numbers will improve. As I said, he, like Dowie wouldn't have been my first choice but I believe the more you think about what we will be getting from Jim the more the appointment sounds pleasing.
Now all we need is a couple of strikers and some full backs and August here we come.
