I think Charlie needs to score quickly to gain some confidence. He looked a bit unsure at Wembley and since then in interviews he has been talking about being the only player never to have played PL and needing to show what he can do. Could be putting himself under too much pressure so he needs that first goal. Ideal opportunity yesterday but if you look at the photo's the ball was a long way from in the corner. With hindsight maybe Remy should have taken it. This might sound silly but this constant adoration of Zamora probably isn't helping him either. Even when he wasn't on the pitch yesterday the "Ohh Bobby Zamora" song was being belted out several times. He needs us to sing his name and boost his confidence rather than singing the name of someone who is rivalling him for his position. Will make him think we want Zamora up top instead of him.

God knows what remy thought about not being given the penalty but i can guess! It's going to be a long, hard season we all knew that. There were some positives though, Faurlin back and given a chance by Harry , remy looked a class above and I did not expect to see him play for us again! I'm sure with more time and coaching from hoddle (if he stays!) we'll start getting some points. Not looking forward to spuds though! Austin is the penalty taker and Remy would have known this.

How can this thread be so full of doom & gloom? Yes, we lost 1-0, in a match where we deserved at least a draw if not a win. We played far, far better than in any game last season. We played as if we are a side good enough for The Premier apart from converting our chances. Somebody has said that Remy should have taken the penalty. Why? Previous to today, both Remy & Austin had 100% penalty records for us, but Remy's was for not scoring! Defensively we were comfortable, including Dunne, & in the first half we were the better team. Remember, this was against a team that had already played two competitive matches. Barton & Faurlin were in control in midfield & you can see how they trust each other. The only problems were Simpson's unease at playing this role & Mutch not being on the same wavelength as the other players. I'm sure that Jordon will improve but I still struggle to understand why he remained on the pitch & Ale was taken off. Mind you, Junior created no more than Mutch when he came on. I hate to say it, but as was said at half time by some not606er's, Adel would have made better use of the space available. No, I am not asking for his return! We may end up being relegated but today was a vast improvement on anything from the previous two years! More importantly, it was great to have a pre match drink with Bushman & Roller. Good to have met you Ian. Already looking forward to the next time. It was a pleasure meeting up Terry, shame the day couldn't have been rounded off with a win.

I like Austin immensely, but his shot was an embarrassment, hit the ground at slow speed, before, the keeper saved.

My fear was either a Bolton or Swansea first game confidence breaker. It was nothing like that though even though we lost. As you say, good to see Faurlin back, thought looked tired but cant blame him for that after his lay off. Remy, what a player. Spurs didnt play that well and MOTD analysis showed glaring faults. If we can get rid of our glaring faults then it may not be as bad as we think. Onwards and upwards eh!

Wasn't there a Columbian goal keeper who took penalties. Called El Loco or something like that I think. Greeno for penalty taker! You heard it here first!

Well I must have been watching a different match, or perhaps viewing it with a Portuguese commentator didn't help. I was alarmed at how pedestrian we were, seemed like a lot of unfit players out there to me, just glad it wasn't against City or Liverpool. Play all the classy football you like, and we did at times, all pointless if you don't put those chances away. Quite shocked to see the confidence drain away from Charlie.
However I'm pretty confident Mr Hoddle can do a McClaren and get us firing on all cylinders again. Spurs will be a real test.

Our pace was incredibly quicker than we have played at in the past two years. IMO this was our best performance since the win against Arsenal in the season we avoided relegation.

I thought we did ok yesterday for a first game
Isla for Simpson will be an improvement
Traore was disappointing for me. Both wingback needed to be more progressive for us to create more chances
This won't be popular but for me faurlin is a weak link that needs replacing for us to improve. His passing is ok but he vener carries the ball so when he gets it there is no direct threat only the passing threat. That's not good enough for a starting 11 central midfielder in the premiership. Ale needs to change his game a bit or will be the one to slip out of the starting 11. I don't like saying it because he is a favourite of mine but reality bites.

Cant believe all the crap being said about charlie missing a pen so bloody what didnt miss one last year without his goals last season we would still be in the championship he will get amongst the goals before long as for remy taking it he would have known charlie dont miss normaly so would have known hes first in line. Thought faurlin looks like the old ali again which is great for us still think traore not good enough lots of pace no delivery as is simpson yun would be better and must get a chance soon isla will be a great addition having played that role before i think with another 2 or 3 players we will be ok and charlie will bag 15+ this season.

Fa would like to think he could be encouraged to drive with the ball when in advanced positions. I seem to recall he did this a bit more often earlier in his career defensively he is fine. It's just when we have possession against a set defence he needs to carry a threat. If he could carry a ball past players like diakite can it would be fine. As it is I can see either fer or a another replacing him. He will still be a good player to have coming off the bench
