Came through the youth ranks. A native of the evil town of H**h W*****e as was Mike Keen & Tony Hazel. He was rated by many as better than Gerry Francis (couldn't see that myself) but was a very exciting prospect.
We signed Dave Thomas as his replacment inside a couple of days of his leg being broken. Sadly he never recovered his initial form after his return from injury but he can't be blamed for that.
I was at Fulham the night Paul Went made the worst challenge I have seen on a football pitch & did his best to ruin our mood as we won 2-0.
Went was till recently a salesman for Heineken in the Ipswich area but has now retired due to being a near cripple. Justice has finally been served.
The national Heineken rep who I deal with sugested to me once that he would invite Went along to one of our meetings. I replied he could do that but I would spit in his face & then walk out of the meeting. He asked me why as I didn't know him. I then proceeded to tell him what a c*** Went is & sugested that he ask him about Busby & the hatred he faces from all Queens Park rangers supporters.

GJ: After the sale of Rodney we finished the season in fourth place, we were so near to promotion that I was concerned that without him we would struggle to do even better. We needed to strengthen our attack and with £200,000 in the bank and a Chairman who wanted success we had the opportunity to buy new players. The key was to sign the right players. When I asked the Chairman to buy Don Givens he was not that keen but he allowed me to spend £40,000 on him as our first summer buy. The Chairman was keen on Stan Bowles as he had played so well against us just before the end of the 70/71 season so we were able to beat Crystal Palace for his signature from Carlisle for a fee of £110,000. So we spent a total of £150,000 and signed two excellent goal scoring forwards. We were playing well and had won six, drawn six and only lost once when Martyn Busby broke his leg at Fulham. We had a very young Reserve team and there was no really experienced player to bring in. The meeting the next day following Martyn's injury was incredible; Jim Gregory called the meeting to discuss what action we should take to continue our aim for promotion. Derek Healy our Chief Scout and myself were suggesting a number of players in the £40,000 to £50,000 range when the Chairman suddenly suggested Dave Thomas, I had seen Dave a number of times and knew that he was a good player. Leeds were making talk of a £200,000 bid for Dave and I thought he was way out of our range having already spent £150,000. Regardless I called Jimmy Adamson at Burnley and told him of our interest and we put the two Chairmen together on the phone and they eventually agreed a price of £165,000. I then got back on with Jimmy and had him contact Dave and get him on a train to arrive in London that night telling him to make certain that he brought his boots! Derek met Dave at Euston Station and drove him to my house in Kingston to meet myself and Club Secretary Ron Phillips. Twenty minutes later Dave had signed subject to a medical on Friday morning. We had secured a third top class forward and he played the next day against Sunderland.... www.qprnet.com/index.php/interviews-2/int-managers/19-interview-jagoScoring against Chelsea! Martyn busby was better than francis before he broke his leg, am certain he would have been a full international before gerry, most complete attacking midfielder at a very young age. The fact that the club bought in such a high caliber name to replace him speaks volumes, and Dave thomas did not live up to expectations playing in busby's midfield role, and was later moved to the wing. The rest is history......

just prior to that horrendous injury to Busby I was at Villa Park in a top of the table clash. We won 1-0, but it was the most one sided game you'd see, it could have been 3 or 4. That was because of the total domination in midfield, Busby, Venables and Francis. I would'nt argue Bowles is our best ever player, but Gerry would be No. 2 in my opinion. Martyn never really had the chance to fulfill his potential after that Went tackle. How good he would have been is anyones guess

Bump a year/Missed by a day. Loan Previous Clubs: None Pompey Debut: 07 February 1976 v Bolton Wanderers, League (L 0-1) First Pompey Goal: 14 February 1976 v Plymouth Argyle (W 2-0) Games: 6 (All league) Goals: 1 Final Game: 06 March 1976 v Fulham (W 1-0) Transferred to: Returned to QPR - Loan End Subsequent Clubs: Notts. County, QPR, Burnley (Loan) Profile: Considered one of Queens Park Rangers brightest young prospects for many a year, midfielder Martyn Busby signed professional terms with The Hoops as a 16 year old in 1970. Although he made his debut in a 1-2 defeat against Leicester that April, Busby did not fully establish himself in the first team until early 1972 when he started the last fourteen games of the season Martyn shone in an exciting QPR team and seemed to get better the more games he played. By the start of the 1972-73 season the (by now) 19 year old was growing in stature and showing all the signs that he would live up to his full potential, but with only a few weeks of the new season gone catastrophe struck. In what was described as a thuggish tackle, one of Busbys` legs was left dangling in the Craven Cottage cold night air courtesy of Fulham's Paul Went. At first it was thought that the terrible injury would end Busby's career but after 18 months he did return to action but was never quite able to reproduce the form he had previously shown and with Dave Sexton's QPR on the verge of arguably their greatest season ever, Busby was deemed to be no more than a fringe player. In February 1976 Busby was loaned to Ian St. John's second division Portsmouth who considering they had just recorded their fist home victory of the season, were unsurprisingly bottom of the league. Three days after agreeing the loan Martyn Busby made his Pompey debut at Fratton Park against a Bolton side gunning for promotion but was able to offer little as Wanderers walked away with the points to temporarily claim the leagues top spot. Subsequent games; a 2-0 home win over Plymouth (in which Busby scored) and a 3-0 victory at follow strugglers Blackburn however gave Pompey their first back to back wins of the season to lift them off the bottom and ignite talk of a mini revival, but a midweek loss at Stamford Bridge followed by a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Notts. County in the next two games restored the reality of Pompey's plight. Busby's sixth and final game for The Blues saw a return to the scene of his horrific injury as Pompey collected both points with a spirited 1-0 victory over Fulham. As the loan period expired Martyn Busby returned to QPR, who by now where challenging for the First Division title, but as the season drew to a close Busby once again found himself surplus to Dave Sexton's requirements at Loftus Road. QPR eventually finished Division One Runners-up to Liverpool as Pompey, together with York City and Oxford United were relegated (25 pts from 42 games) to Division Three Later the same year Busby was loaned and then permanently transferred to second division Notts County for £40,000. As regular football saw Martyn recapture glimpses of his past form other clubs began to show interest. Ironically he transferred back to a 'Sextonless' QPR little under a year later for double what he had been sold for. Sadly, neither Busby or QPR were ever fully able to recapture their past form and in 1980, after a less than successful month long loan spell at Burnley and having played a total of 146 league games, during his two spells with QPR, Busby retired due to injury. Career Highlights: …....1970 - Signs professional terms with QPR Apr 1970 - Makes QPR debut Oct 1972 - Breaks leg Feb 1976 - Loaned to Portsmouth Oct 1976 - Transfers to Notts County Sep 1977 - Rejoins QPR Feb 1980 - Loaned to Burnley …....1980 - Retires due to injury Other Interesting Facts: The player purchased by QPR to replace Martin Busby following his injury was Burnley's England U-23 midfielder Dave Thomas. Thomas also later played for Pompey. When Busby made his Pompey debut he lined up alongside Paul Went - The player whose lunging tackle had broken his leg three years earlier Martyn Busby is the younger brother of former Fulham striker Viv who played in the 1975 FA Cup Final against West Ham United There is some debate surrounding Martin Busby's birthday with both 24th March and 24th May being quoted as correct. For the purposes of this article March has been used which if correct means that Busby shares his birthday with ex-Pompey player Aliou Cisse
