Shame. In the back of my mind I had him gaining some experience at Palace and then joining us in a couple of years, when we're back in the Championship.

Would be a strange move, unless Freedman has some affiliation with Lancashire. If he does move while under contract it shows Freedman places ambition over loyalty (not that that is a rare thing these days).

Standard Crystal Palace u-turn means Dougie Freedman can talk to Bolton 1 of 1 23 October 2012 Dougie Freedman is set for talks to become Bolton's new manager after a u-turn from his club Crystal Palace paved the way for negotiations over the Reebok Stadium vacancy. Speculation mounted over the weekend that Wanderers, who sacked Owen Coyle on October 9, had made an approach for Freedman. A statement on Palace's official website last night went back on their initial rejection of Bolton's advances. The statement read: "Following further discussions throughout the day, Crystal Palace Football Club can confirm that permission has been granted for Dougie Freedman to speak to Bolton Wanderers regarding their vacant managerial position." Phillips, who led Bolton to a dramatic 3-2 win over Bristol City on Saturday in the first match of the post-Coyle era, revealed he was aware of an approach for the 38-year-old Scot following discussions with chairman Phil Gartside. He said: "Phil said from the outset he'd be open and honest with us and he came to the training ground yesterday and said he had made contact with Palace to speak to Dougie Freedman." This news brought a swift response from Palace. "Crystal Palace can confirm that they have received a request from Bolton Wanderers to speak to Dougie Freedman regarding their vacant manager's position," read a lunchtime statement on www.cpfc.co.uk. "Permission has not been granted for Dougie to speak to Bolton." But the situation altered during the course of the afternoon, leaving the manager of the Championship's fourth placed side as the overwhelming favourite to take charge of a team 12 places further down the standings. Having scored 108 goals across two playing spells with Palace, Freedman joined the south London outfit as assistant manager in 2010 and was put in charge following the departure of George Burley the following January. In his first full season at the helm, Freedman led the club to a famous 2-1 victory over Manchester United in the League Cup at Old Trafford before eventually falling to Cardiff on penalties in the semi-finals. In his column with the Croydon Advertiser on Friday, Freedman appeared to suggest he would might opt to remain with Palace in the event of an approach from Bolton. He wrote: "Speculation comes with this job; either you get sacked or you get rave reviews. Either way, I can't comment on maybe some young guy in his bedroom putting money on me getting the Bolton job - it's just ridiculous. "The simple facts are that I'm in the middle of building Crystal Palace Football Club, and when I picked the club up, we were in a dark place. "I think I'm halfway there in getting the club the way I want it to be, and I'm not the sort of guy to leave jobs half done." Should he take on the assignment at Bolton, Freedman will be faced with arresting a dramatic slide after Coyle's tenure spiralled from an FA Cup semi-final 18 months ago to relegation from the Barclays Premier League last season www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/crystal-palace-uturn-means-dougie-freedman-can-talk-to-bolton-8222166.html

Seems it's only us FANS these days that are loyal in what we do. Modern game, money, money, money, bollx, bollx, bollx. Fed up with the lot of it to be honest. Keep the faith you R's and hurry up and get winning or else we play you again next season!!!

But beyond "Loyalty vs Ambition"
Just from Freeman's own perspective, would think would stay and build up more at Palace... At Bolton will be lot of pressure very quickly. (And I wonder just how good Freeman really is)
So many managers have started brightly (Think Dowie)...Didnt stay long enough and ended up failing and dropping out

I'm hoping the whole truth comes out eventually as I cannot believe he would just drop us (after everything) and go up north simply over money. We are 4th in the league, playing great football with some real talent in our squad. Was looking good for playoff candidates as well. Hey ho, only at Palace We were over due our annual dose of drama I guess

As opposed to a few days ago... www.thisiscroydontoday.co.uk/Freedman-m-interested-building-Crystal-Palace/story-17111794-detail/story.htmlFreedman: I'm only interested in building Crystal Palace Football ClubThursday, October 18, 2012 Mark_Ritson CRYSTAL Palace manager Dougie Freedman has responded in his exclusive Croydon Advertiser column to bookmakers' claims that he's the odds-on favourite for the Bolton Wanderers managerial vacancy. The boss' odds were slashed on Tuesday morning ahead of Mick McCarthy, Ole Gunnar Solksjaer and Phil Brown, but he says he's in the process of rebuilding the Eagles and not interested in leaving. "I'm in the middle of building Crystal Palace Football Club, and when I picked the club up, we were in a dark place," Freedman said. "I think I'm halfway there in getting the club the way I want it to be, and I'm not the sort of guy to leave jobs half done." Meanwhile, the manager has reitirated his stance on Wilfried Zaha, insisting there are no plans to sell the winger. "He's happy, confident and on a long contract at Palace so there's no need to sell him," he said. "When we think it's right, we'll sit down to make a decision, but I don't see it happening in the near future." And Freedman said he will be looking to dip into the loan market on the back of David Goodwillie's return to Blackburn Rovers earlier this week. "I am going to look at the loan market again and try to do something, but I won't be going out to just get anybody," he said. Don't miss the whole of Freedman's exclusive column in Friday's Croydon Advertiser, where he talks more about the Bolton link, what he'd do if Scotland came calling, his price estimation for Wilfried Zaha and his thoughts ahead of Millwall on Saturday.

Palace gave him his chance, took a risk to appoint him.
Now he bails at the first sniff of an opportunity.
Poor.

Confirmed then. If you look at both clubs (supporters and history) and the current league table it's a very strange decision. But that's football in a world where not a lot makes sense.
And yet another inexperienced manager who's placed ambition over loyalty.

PS I havent checked the Bolton forums but I am guessing their fans are hardly ecstatic with this appointment. Also there's going to be a lot of pressure on Freedman to win promotion. Failure to do so and he'll just end up another statistic.

Yep, I also understand Freedman told reporters he was committed to building something at Palace after being asked if would leave to join Bolton (assumign that's true). Doesn't say much for his integrity does it.

Interesting replies here! Didn't think many of you would feel the same. I guess it just shows and confirms that there aren't really any more heroes in football. Shame. Seems it was an "obsession for Premiership" rather than money according to our Chairman. Hmmm, good luck with that at Bolton dougie! Oh, and Manta, their forums/fans really don't seem too impressed about his appointment.

As a complete 180 on what I said earlier....
Unsubstantiated rumour is that Bolton doubled his wages. I like where I work but if another company offered to double my wages I have to be honest and say all other things being equal I'd be over there in a flash.
and so would you.

Ok, well I think we already established money was the factor so I don't doubt its true considering how quickly Freedman changed his position from "I'm committed to building a team at Palace" in a day or so.
