Thanks Finney... This was on our board last year Re: If You Sit And Think Long And Hard « Result #11 on Oct 19, 2011, 8:33pm » Oct 19, 2011, 7:56pm, betacam wrote:Nice angle mikehunt. I did think, long and hard. Moments, too many to count, flew by. Still I ended up with a (maybe) strange choice. One hour before kick off in our FAC QF vs Crystal Palace in '82, I went into a phone booth in Steinkjer, Norway, and called up the club. If we won, we'd make history, as we'd never made it to the semis before. I just felt the urge to actually do something. Nerves were fragile, to say the least. Answering the phone in London, say 1500-2000 kilometres away, was Daphne Biggs. I was a bit surprised that someone actually picked up the phone, but there she was. I stuttered my name and location, and she was all ears. I came up with the not so original idea of wishing the lads good luck against Palace. I remember vividly what she said: - I'll tell you what Allan, I'll get that message through to the players. I promise. Said Mrs. Biggs. I said thanks and hung up. There are many stories to tell, but this one made we stop and think. It also probably made me the anglofilian that I am today, and cemented my support to QPR. I never met Mrs. Biggs, but later heard of many stories on her influence on behalf of a true family club. So, in memory of Daphne Biggs, that is my contribution to an excellent thread. MAUDESFishNChips i can tell a charming story about our Daphne, in Daphne's later years at LR she got to using a hearing aid which had always proved a bit of a nuisance to her, on one particular day, when the board and manager were locked away in one of the offices discussing something quite important they heard a high pitched whistling noise, this became the main topic of debate for the occupants of this meeting, after a while the noise went, so they carried on their very important dicussion. The source of this noise was known to one person in that meeting at the time who did'nt let on to the others, but told me that it was our Daphne listening in at the door adjusting her hearing aid. qprreport.proboards.com/index.cgi#ixzz24XVkdqB8

I first met Daph in 1963. and the last time was just before she passed away. I have many happy memories of a wonderful lady, also too many humorous ones to mention. From the 1951-52 Supporters Club Handbook.

Excellent little article on her on Indy R's. As I said on there. In the terms of QPR "Legends", surely she has more than earned the right to be considered one in the big scheme of things.
Super awesome lady in my opinion. Yes, I got growled at, but then she also was compassionate, and often went that extra bit to help.
Do any of the older fans remember or had met her husband Albert? If so, what was he like?

From the 1951-52 Supporters Club Handbook. Bushman, was wondering if I could ask you about the Ladies Section of the supporter's club as I've never heard of them before and thought it looked interesting. Was it normal for other clubs to have a specific female-only section and did they perform specific role? Like was it something started by women to meet up with other female supporters as a social thing or was it more functional than that? Sorry to bombard you, just interested if you get the chance

Good question. I love learning about the clubs history. Not the main bits we all know (Except for th fan who thought we won the league cup in 1968), but the small bits that one either takes for granted or never thought of thinking about.

It was not that normal and in fact the Ladies Section ceased as a separate committee at the start of the 1954-55 season. Only three of it's members joined the main Supporters Committee. Daphne Biggs was one of them.

I guess it's only 3 members, but on the other hand there weren't a large amount of Committee titles (I think?) so to have 3 of their number occupying committee positions is a testament to their work I guess. Would be interesting to know why it ceased to exist - whether they became disenchanted or simply that they felt they could work better within the structure of the general supporters club. Either way, thanks, never even heard of this part of our history before.

OMG, time has flown. I wonder what she would make of our last 4 seasons? Probably some dry remark.

She and I had a good personal relationship. Would call her for the scores, and shed' say."Have to go up and watch the last 10 minutes". Then shed call me back and give me the good or bad news. Travelled on the buses to the away games and ate at the eateries with us. Didn't live far from where I grew up.
