Development Report: Palace 2 QPR 4
Posted on: Tue 28 Feb 2012
A young Palace side went down fighting against an experienced QPR outfit in Tuesday's development game whilst there was a welcome return to Beckenham for ex-Palace loanee Peter Ramage.
An experienced Rangers side flew out of the blocks and were soon ahead inside two minutes when Lee Cook's cross found the QPR number 10 unmarked to head home. Rangers soon were soon incredibly three goals to the good when, following an unsighted second goal, Patrick Agyemang showed his quality by cutting in from the left-hand side and curling beyond Ross Fitzsimons.
Palace pulled a goal back almost immediately though. Kyle De Silva's run and cross was smashed back across the box by Antonio Pedroza and tucked home by Calvin Andrew. More lapse defending was to cost the Eagles before half-time though as Agyemang stole a march on his marker to head home another delivery from the left to make the score 4-1.
Curtis Fleming's young side rallied though and Kwesi Appiah soon had his first goal in red and blue when he tucked home Matthew Parsons' cut-back from the left. A breath-taking first half drew to a close not long later.
Academy youngster Gus Sow replaced Owen Garvan at half-time as the game got back on an even keel with Silva and Appiah linking well on the left only for the forward's goal-bound effort to be blocked. Appiah continued to look most likely to find the breakthrough as he danced down the left again and centered for Andrew whose effort was deflected narrowly wide.
Although Palace began to dominate possession, Rangers always offered a threat on the break and Palace were relieved to see the offside flag go up when QPR had the ball in the net again after a clever one-two cut through the Eagles back-line.
Curtis Fleming continued to give his young players game time as Kadell Daniel, Aaron Akuruka and Connor Dymond climbed off the bench, as well as Charlie Holness, but without making an impact on the scoreline.
Of the substitutes it was Daniel who came closest, curling a clever effort from the angle narrowly over after Andrew and Appiah had again linked well. In the end it wasn't to be for Palace as an experienced Rangers side ran out winners in a useful exercise for both squads.
Team: Fitzsimons, Wynter, Holland (Akuruka), Chambers, Parsons (Dymond), Pedroza (Daniel), S'OK (Holness), Garvan (Sow), KDS, Andrew, Appiah
