(For QPR) February 12, 1972 - Rodney Marsh's Last QPR Game at Loftus Road QPR lost 0-1...(We had some damn drummer making a comeback!) Venables limped off for his last game of the season.. And RODNEE... It turned out to be the last time Rodnee wore the hoops at Loftus Road. QPR's 1972 Team against Blackpool: Parkes Clement Hazell Mancini Gillard Saul Venables Francis Ferguson Marsh McCulloch Sub: Busby . After playing in QPR's next two away games (both lost), Marsh was sold to Manchester City, in what for QPR fans at the time was one of the blackest moments in QPR History. Gordon Jago's QPR started the game in a strong promotion position, but after Venables limped off with a groin injury (and missed the rest of the season) just a black day as Blackpool snatched a win. Of course, after Marsh was sold, QPR went the rest of the season (12 games) undefeated, with a teenage midfield duo of Gerry Francis and Martyn Busby - and just missed out on promotion. QPR's first game after selling Roddd....neee Away to promotion-chasing Birmingham after three straight losses Birmingham 0 QPR 0 - and our 20 match unbeaten run was under way Parkes Clement Evans Hazell Gillard Ferguson (Mick Mcgovern) Francis Busby Salvage O'rourke Sub: McCulloch See- Manchester City Impact QPR Net Interview with Gordon Jago QPRnet: We had a good season in your first full campaign in charge but towards the end of it you lost Rodney Marsh to Manchester City, how did that come about and was it something you were in favour of? GJ: Rodney wanted to leave QPR, he thought that, even though he’d earned his first England cap whilst playing for us, that to get carry on earning call ups he had to be with a first division club. I tried to convince him that we were heading for the first division but unfortunately Manchester City had made it no secret that they wanted him and consequently he wanted to leave. The Chairman negotiated a terrific deal for us and we received £200,000 pounds clear, which was a great deal for us at the time

This brings back memories but also exposes my flawed brain. I had this vivid memory (wrong as it turns out!) that the first game post Rodney was away to Luton and Jago played two out and out wingers, Barry Salvage and the other I am not sure but maybe Mike Ferguson? I can visualise being at the game which ended 0-0, but the records show that this is not the case. I think we drew 1-1 with Luton away that season and Rodney Marsh played. Perhaps someone with a more accurate recall can help me out, was there a nil all draw away to Luton in the Jago era and somehow I have mixed this up in my recollections? The stupid thing is that the reason I have this in mind was that I could not believe how well the team played and how organised they looked which gave me heart for the future, maybe it was the Birmingham away game but I cannot remember going to St.Andrews and did go to almost every fixture we played at Luton during that period. Perhaps the shock of Rodney leaving was too much for my young brain to take and it has scrambled the memories!

I don't remember Marsh playing but my dad always says that they were too reliant on him and that, once he was gone, they started to play as a team. Fair reflection?

The playing of two wingers Ferguson Salvage yes...Marsh sold..Saul sold...Venables out for rest of season....Center midfield Teenagers Francis & Busby... When Les Allen was axed and Jago was caretaker manager I THINK we started with draw at Luton

But absolutely relied on him. Ans sometimes he did...sometimes he didn't! After Marsh was sold...Last 12 games of season undefeated...And then first 8 or so next season

I'm almost certain that your right Mac.
Jago's first match as manager (after Les Allen) was a 0-0 draw away to Luton. I wasn't there but I understood that it was a very positive performance & I believe that Luton were in with a chance of promotion.

Thanks for that, I have confused two significant events, one the arrival of Gordon Jago and of course the loss of Rodney. By the way it was one of the best nil nils I have seen!
I only saw Marsh after his return from a broken leg in the season in the first division when he scored 4 goals (I think) but the next season I fell under the spell, we had a run of high scoring home games and looked on fire we scored 4 against several teams (Huddersfield with a young Frank Worthington was one I think) and six against Blackpool when Rodney scored a hat trick in the most appalling rain, especially at the front of the paddock in the SA Rd stand!
I think the team did grow in stature after he left and with all the talented young players that had or were just about to make their mark with Venables as the wise head the timing was probably right. However we were lacking a bit of flair until a certain Stan Bowles was signed.
I personally thought Bowles was a far more team oriented player than Rodney but then we did have so much attacking variety when Bowles played than in the latter period of Marsh's time at the club.

48 years - One of those dark moments when he left (although in hindsight, we used the money well - Givens and Bowles - and still some as part payment for Thomas!)

Perhaps I too often bump old posts...But this is one is worthy!
The sale of Marsh was a sad, sad day - even if it worked out ok
