Portugal football legend sees in New Year at home
After undergoing treatment for bronchial pneumonia for 12 days, Portuguese football legend Eusebio had the perfect New Year’s gift as he was discharged from Lisbon’s Hospital da Luz in time to welcome in 2012 at home alongside his family. “I can say that I am 100%,” said Eusebio in a press conference held at the hospital on Saturday.
Eusebio explained that a series of long journeys in a short space of time led to the problem. “I’m not the greatest fan of travelling and this time I went too far, going to three countries with very different climates at this time of year. In Mozambique it was hot, then in Lisbon it was cold, and then I also went to Brazil,” said the Black Panther, who turns 70 later this month.
“I’m looking forward to seeing in the New Year with my family. I hope nothing else happens to me,” said the smiling Eusebio, knocking on the wooden desk three times. The Benfica idol also made a point of thanking well-wishers for all the support he had received over the last fortnight.
Alongside Eusebio was the hospital’s clinical director, Jose Roquette who said, “bronchial pneumonia is a dangerous situation at any age. But Eusebio has made a complete recovery.”
Eusebio da Silva Ferreira is still widely considered the best Portuguese footballer of all time after a brilliant career playing for Benfica and the Seleccao in the 1960s and 70s.
He won 11 Portuguese championships and led Portugal to third place in the 1966 World Cup, finishing the tournament as top scorer with nine goals.
