Northampton Town have terminated the contracts of Ashley Westwood and Chris Arthur.
Westwood arrived at the club for a second spell in August, while Arthur signed on a short term contract in October.
The contracts of both players were due to expire in January.
"I made this decision now as I believe in being 100% honest with people," said boss Aidy Boothroyd.
"The two lads were not going to feature in the first team in the next few weeks, so I thought it was better to tell them now, they can spend Christmas with their families, and they are free agents for the January transfer window.
"We wish them both well for the future."'
