Suppose if he comes through it unscathed he gets the England job if he wants if , maybe if Cappello wins the Euros , he wont want it anyway. Redknapp to stand trial in January on charges of cheating the public revenue Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp will face trial for tax evasion next year, it can be reported for the first time today. He is accused of two counts of cheating the public revenue between specific dates in 2002 and 2007 when he was manager of Portsmouth Football Club. Redknapp is accused alongside the then Portsmouth FC chairman Milan Mandaric. The first charge alleges that between April 1, 2002, and November 28, 2007, Mandaric paid 145,000 US dollars into a bank account held by Redknapp in Monaco, to avoid paying income tax and national insurance. The second charge for the same offence relates to a sum of 150,000 US dollars allegedly paid by Mandaric to the same account between May 1, 2004, and November 28, 2007. Both men deny the charges and a two-week trial is due to begin at London's Southwark Crown Court on January 23. Judge Anthony Leonard QC ruled on Thursday afternoon that a ban on reporting details of the proceedings could be lifted at 2.30pm today. Redknapp, 64, underwent minor heart surgery earlier this month to unblock his arteries, and has missed a number of Spurs games while he recovers. He was hoping to return to the touchline within two weeks, but said recently he had been advised by doctors to stay away for four or five.

Never understood how with this shadow hanging over him (before today), he was being so strongly linked to the England job. Would think they'd want a guaranteed "Mr. Clean" as manager - forget how good he might be.
Obviously presumed innocent until/unless...and he may well be found not guilty... But whatever the verdict, I don't think this will exactly help his England prospects - even with the FA Propensity for making strange decisions

Guardian/Matt Scott Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp faces January trial over tax charges • Redknapp and Milan Mandaric deny tax allegations • Charges relate to their time together at Portsmouth Harry Redknapp and Milan Mandaric face trial on 23 January next year relating to allegations of cheating the public revenue. Redknapp denies any wrongdoing but would have good reason for his mind to be on other matters when Tottenham Hotspur take on the current Premier League leaders, Manchester City, at the Etihad Stadium the day before the proceedings begin. The timing of the trial may interfere with his club's preparations for the Premier League matches against Wigan Athletic and Liverpool, and, should Spurs qualify, the fourth round of the FA Cup on 28 January. Redknapp and Mandaric, the owner of Sheffield Wednesday, both face two counts of cheating the public revenue. Their alleged offences relate to tax payments due while the pair were respectively manager and chairman of Portsmouth. The indictment laid down by prosecutors states: "Mandaric and Redknapp, between 1 April 2002 and 28 November 2007, with intent to defraud and to the prejudice of HM Revenue and Customs, arranged for $145,000, paid by Mandaric as a result of or in connection with Redknapp's employment and as a reward for services, to be transferred to a Monaco bank account opened by Redknapp for that purpose, in order to conceal the said emolument from HM Revenue and Customs and evade the payment of income tax and national insurance contributions thereon (whether by the operation of PAYE by the club or otherwise)." As for count two, the indictment states: "Mandaric and Redknapp between 1 May 2004 and 28 November 2007, with intent to defraud and to the prejudice of HM Revenue and Customs, arranged for $150,000, paid by Mandaric as a result of or in connection with Redknapp's employment and as a reward for services, to be transferred to a Monaco bank account opened by Redknapp for that purpose, in order to conceal the said employment income from HM Revenue and Customs and evade the payment of income tax and national insurance contributions thereon (whether by the operation of PAYE by the club or otherwise)." The pair will fight the charges in a trial scheduled to last two weeks. www.guardian.co.uk/football/2011/nov/12/tottenham-harry-redknapp-tax-trial
