Match Report
Wigan 0 QPR 0 23.4.2005 (Championship)
Rangers earned a point at Wigan, despite the Latics having an overwhelming amount of chances in front of goal.
They say that lightening doesn't strike twice, but that's exactly what happened at the JJB Stadium.
After taking a battering by the Latics at Loftus Road and still coming away with all three points, Rangers once again salvaged something from a game in which they were pressurised throughout.
Throughout the first half the gap in class could be seen, but Rangers held firm and could have scored on several occasions.
Each of these efforts fell to Shabazz Baidoo, who had an impressive first half.
After the break it was more of the same. Jason Roberts was guilty of the worst miss of them all when his effort hit the post, rolled along the goal line and away to safety.
The most notable change in the line-ups came between the sticks where Genneroso Rossi made his first start for the Club.
Elsewhere, Shabazz Baidoo earned his second start in succession, partnering Adam Miller up front.
Georges Santos returned from his suspension to take up central defence alongside Dan Shittu and Kevin Gallen partnered Marcus Bean in the centre of midfield.
Brett Ormerod was the first to threaten the Italian's goal, but Rossi was equal to the low drive and got down to prevent an early goal.
The opening 15 minutes were a show in just why Wigan are currently sitting pretty in second place.
Wave after wave of attacks flowed from one end of the JJB Stadium to the other, but Rangers were resolute and held firm.
Baidoo got his first chance to open his sails up with 17 minutes gone. Expertly trapping the ball and turning towards goal, the youngster dashed with the ball at his feet until he was clattered by Jimmy Bullard.
Lee McCulloch then had a glorious chance to give the Latics the lead when he headed over from a corner with 20 minutes gone.
It was Baidoo who registered Rangers' first shot on target. Marcus Bignot played in the youngster down the right and although his effort was well placed, it just didn't have the power to beat John Filan.
A superb ball through by Graham Kavanagh to Ormerod should have resulted in Wigan taking the lead.
But Ormerod scuffed his second chance of the game slipping over just as he was about to pull the trigger.
You knew it wouldn't be too long before Jason Roberts started to make a menace of himself, but Rangers were once again given a let off when his shot flew wide of the post.
It was Baidoo in the thick of the action once again on the half hour mark.
Bignot found Jamie Cureton, who in turn knocked the ball down to the flighty forward failed to get an impressive attempt on target.
It was that boy Baidoo again moments later as he really got a chance to show the travelling Rangers fans what they can look forward to in the future.
On the break, Cureton began his jaunt towards goal with Baidoo a good couple of yards behind him.
By the time Cureton was level with the 18 yard box, Baidoo was already goal hanging and screaming for the ball.
But before he could get his shot in, he was closed down by Nicky Eaden.
Adam Miller then found himself in the centre of goal and on the end of a Lee Cook's corner, but it didn't look like he knew much about the ball hitting him and Filan was able to gather the ball from close range.
Wigan then had a glorious chance to go ahead on the stroke of half time when McCulloch received the ball in the area with only Rossi to beat.
But with the whole of the goal to aim at, he instead put his shot wide of the post.
The second half began with yet more Latics pressure.
Kavanagh's corner was narrowly missed by Matt Jackson at the far post an it skimmed past the face of goal.
Ormerod then wrapped up his hat-trick of misses by skying a shot miles over the bar when completely unchallenged.
There was worse to come for Wigan when Roberts ran onto a mistimed header by Shittu.
Rounding the defender, Roberts picked his spot and fired a fierce shot goalwards, but missed the target by several yards.
Rossi then made an impressive save from a 25 yard Kavanagh free kick. The direct hit was goal bound, but the Italian made the all important save just as the ball was about to dip under the bar.
Some desperate defending from Shittu and Santos then managed to keep out McCulloch and Ormerod in quick succession. Rangers were living on a knife edge.
Never more so was this proved than on 66 minutes. Roberts stormed through and bent the ball around Rossi.
He was all set to reel away in celebration, but just as the home side rose to their feet in celebration, the ball smacked against the far post, spun along the goal line and rolled back into open play.
Rossi was then on hand to tip away the follow up shot.
With Baidoo already having left their field for Luke Townsend, Rangers made their second change with Aaron Brown making his Rangers debut in place of Cook.
Townsend then had a chance in front of goal after running onto a superb through ball from Miller. But with Jackson closing down, Townsend couldn't dig the ball goalwards.
Once again, Wigan were wasting chance after chance and it was beginning to look as though Rangers were going to earn a draw out of it.
Up front, Rangers were severely lacking in firepower since the departure of Baidoo and were unable to put together any fluid passing moves.
Sitting out the final five minutes, Rangers held on to take their fourth point from a side gunning for Premiership football next season.

Hooray , just found a video clip for this one showing the Furlong winner , funnily enough Bullard gives the ball away for our goal

Rangers stole a late goal against Wigan to pick up three points against the league leaders.
An 86th minute header from Paul Furlong was enough to condemn Wigan to their second straight defeat despite an organised display from the visitors for the majority of the game.
Rangers had been lucky to go in at half time with the scores still at 0-0 after Wigan had seen the better chances in front of goal, but the Rs had somehow kept them locked out.
Then a much improved second half display from Ian Holloway's men brought a deserved finale courtesy of the Superhoops' leading scorer.
Ian Holloway was able to offer Gareth Ainsworth a place in the starting eleven for the first time in three months and Marcus Bignot returned from his one match suspension meaning Frankie Simek dropped to the bench.
Marcus Bean partnered Kevin Gallen in the centre of midfield due to Marc Bircham serving a one match ban.
Rangers set out to achieve what only Plymouth have managed this season, to take three points of off table topping Wigan. But with the deadly duo of Jason Roberts and Nathan Ellington up front for the Latics, this was always going to be tough.
The opening exchanges saw Roberts give Rangers a taster of just how much of a handful he could be when he raced to the by-line and cut the ball back into the box. Thankfully, the ever-ready Georges Santos was on hand to sweep the ball away into midfield.
Gareth Ainsworth was proving to be his usual bulldozing self as he tore up and down the right wing, skilfully switching in his ability to defend and then attack.
Rangers had their first scare at the back when Nathan Ellington stormed through the middle of the park and had only Chris Day to beat, only to send his shot straight at the keeper.
As play then swung to the other end, Paul Furlong had a chance to put Rangers ahead. Marcus Bean did well to hold off his man on the wing and sent in a perfectly placed ball for Furlong, but Rangers' leading marksman failed to get his header on target.
Furlong had yet another chance as Jamie Cureton made his way to the by-line and squared for his strike partner, but he couldn't get his shot on target and was hustled wide by his marker.
Dan Shittu was then on hand at the other end when Jimmy Bullard swept the ball into the danger area, only to see it charged down and cleared by the big man at the back.
Rangers were living dangerously at the back and the Roberts-Ellington partnership was beginning to weave its magic.
Guiding the ball along the by-line, Ellington looked up to spot his partner well placed and played him in. Somehow though, the man with ten goals this season skewed his shot well wide if the target.
A midfield mix-up between Matthew Rose and Marcus Bean then saw Roberts pick up a loose ball and play in the unmarked Nicky Eaden. His strike on goal skipped across the grass and looked certain to nestle in the back of the net, but somehow Rangers were let off again as it rolled past the far post.
The second half began in the same vein as the first with Wigan superior in their organisation and physically dominant.
Once again they looked certain to score when Roberts went through on goal and sent his shot beyond Day, but once again, beyond the post. The Latics just weren't getting the rub of the green in front of goal.
Seconds later it was Rangers who could have take the lead. Lee Cook slipped the ball into Marcus Bignot's path as the right back bore down on goal. Bignot's effort was goalbound, but John Filan was well positioned at his near post to save.
On the hour, Rangers started to look livelier up front and started to create chances in front of goal. Cook's high ball for Furlong caught Wigan on the hop and Furlong burst through to hammer the ball just wide of the far post.
Ian Holloway then made a tactical change, bringing off Ainsworth and sending Kevin McLeod on up front with Jamie Cureton switching to the right hand side of midfield.
Chris Day then pulled off a wonder save to deny Alan Mahon as his free kick from out on the wing bent at a ridiculous angle to almost sneak in to the top far corner of the net. Thankfully, Day's alertness had him springing up to palm away the ball to maintain parity.
Another change saw Santos moved up front while Gino Padula replaced Lee Cook.
As the clock hit 80, McLeod received the ball from Furlong on the edge of the box and looked certain to score, but again goals were proving to be hard to come by in this game and the goal mouth failed to be threatened once again.
But then, against all the odds, Rangers took the lead against the table toppers thanks to the combined work of McLeod and Furlong.
A blistering run from McLeod down the left wing and a pinpoint ball onto Furlong's head took a deft flick from the leading marksman to send the ball into the back of the net.
A tense last few minutes and two minutes injury time were real edge of the seat stuff, but Rangers kept their cool to wrap up a truly thrilling win.
The three points now sees Holloway's men back up in fifth place.

Classic Encounter
Wigan 1 QPR 2 22.9.2001
Not really a classic but the best I can do on this occasion !
This was our best performance away from home so far – not that it was anything special, but we deserved the win against a very average Wigan side, and for once if was us who got the luck with Brannan’s injury-time OG.
There was three changes from the side that drew at Blackpool. With Ben Askar declared fit after breaking his nose only four days earlier, he returned to central defence, with Warren replacing Bruce at left back. Perry (grrr) replaced Doudo down the right as Holloway reverted back to the 4-4-2 formation. It wasn’t as attack-minded as at Blackpool, but at least we weren’t getting overrun in every department.
The first half, as so many, was pretty much a non-affair until two goals shortly before half-time livened everyone up. Wigan claimed the first, courtesy of Dinning, but Thomson quickly put QPR back on level terms, punishing a mistake in defence to find the net with a low shot.
The second half was most pleasing though because we actually played like we wanted to win the game, instead of the usual soaking up pressure and hoping for a break away attack.
Griffiths was everywhere, his energy was unmatched – if he had a right foot and could head the ball he would be one hell of a player. His left foot alone should cause plenty of problems at this level though. Connolly was much better than of late, not sure if it had anything to do with Warren behind him instead of Bruce but both linked up well.
Most would have settled for a point and an encouraging performance, but in the last minute of the five added on by the ref (anyone else know where they came from?), Brannan headed into his own net from Perry’s free-kick to grab all three points at the very death.
7 points from 3 games, and 8 goals since Brighton — when many fans started fearing the worst – ain’t bad at all. It could almost have been 9 points from 9, which would have seen us lying second in the table. To have been in second place on our overall form this season would have been quite laughable – even eighth place, where we currently find ourselves, takes some getting used to.
This shouldn’t be viewed as negative talk – whilst its pleasing to see us in a healthy position, our ‘new’ team still haven’t properly gelled yet, and I’m overly confident we can sustain such heights, but I’d gladly be proved wrong.
We’ve had our share of bad luck, but plenty of good luck along the way – the fact our last five goals away from home have originated from defensive errors says a lot. Our midfield have not scored or barely created a goal, and we’ve yet to even score with a header – not surprising when we average about 1.6 crosses a game.
Who knows, perhaps before Christmas we’ll be seeing Peacock and Langley lining up in central midfield again – and they will make a big difference to this side.
QPR: 4-4-2 – Day 7 – Forbes 7, Ben Askar 7, Palmer 6, Warren 7 – Perry 6, Bignot 6, Rose 7, Connolly 7 – Griffiths 8, Thomson 6 (74mins M’Bombo 7). SNU: Bull, Wardley, Barr, Pacquette. Att: 6,686.
