Team Lotus owner Tony Fernandes announces West Ham bid on Twitter
• Malaysian Formula One team owner says 'offer has gone in'
• Sam Allardyce 'bemused' by possibility of club's sale
Tony Fernandes, the Team Lotus Formula One owner, has claimed he has made an offer to buy West Ham United from David Gold and David Sullivan. The news took Sam Allardyce by surprise with the new manager, whose appointment was confirmed this morning, stating that he had been convinced to join West Ham after receiving assurances regarding the club's stability.
The Malaysian businessman wrote on Twitter: "For all you West Ham fans an offer has gone to the present owners of West Ham. Let's see if they accept. [There] won't be any more statements on West Ham [I'm just] keeping fans informed. Now we have to just respect the process. If something happens it happens. If it goes quiet it goes quiet."
When asked for his reaction Allardyce told Sky Sports News: "I'm bemused by the statement but my information, having spoken to David Sullivan, was that he was not wanting to sell West Ham because it's his club, it's the club he has always supported.
"That was one of the reasons why I took the job, because I didn't want any fractions in terms of change of ownerships because my reputation has already suffered, wrongly so, by new ownerships at Newcastle [United] and Blackburn [Rovers], disposing of my services when there was no real credibility in that other than the fact that they were new owners and they didn't want me. It wasn't down to results, it wasn't down to how I'd performed as a manager. If that's the case [that Fernandes has made an offer], and that materialised, then I'm surprised at that."
Fernandes came close to buying the club in January 2010 but was beaten to the purchase by the current owners, but Sullivan said: "We've had no offer from Tony. We just think any serious bidder would make an offer in private not through Twitter."
When Gold, speaking to Sky Sports News, was informed of Fernandes's claim, he said: "That's news to me – I certainly haven't heard any information regarding this, it's interesting. We're interested in finance coming into the football club, we welcome that. I'd be happy to sit down with Tony to [discuss him] joining the board. Let's hope it's serious – we'd welcome another investor."
Asked if he would be tempted to sell the club outright, Gold said: "I don't know. It's really bizarre that somebody should start negotiations by Twitter."

TONY FERNANDES has blasted West Ham owners David Sullivan and David Gold after the duo laughed off his bid to buy the club.
Fernandes, who owns the Lotus Formula One team and airline AirAsia, submitted an offer to buy the Hammers on Thursday.
But Sullivan labelled the bid derisory and hit back saying that 'Fernandes wanted to buy 51 per cent of the club for two bob'.
And now West Ham fan Fernandes has launched a stinging attack on Gold and Sullivan by criticising their running of the club.
On Twitter he said: "Make up your mind Sullivan and Gold. One minute you say no offer, then you say it's a joke offer. It was a good offer with good money and brought in good people.
"Gold and Sullivan can say whatever they want.
"I have been a lifelong fan and would have brought good money, good ideas, new people and a new belief.
"As for PR stunts. Wow. They are always in the press making huge claims.
"Were we not supposed to be in Europe?
"Now we've been relegated. Two sacked managers. All the good players will be sold.
"No new training ground, which is the most important ingredient I feel. Look at how many injuries we have.
"And we need more investment into the academy."
Malaysian businessman Fernandes, 47, first launched a bid to buy the club back in 2009 but lost out to Sullivan and Gold
