Back in the Good old days, when there weren't these stupid open and closed windows, etc...

ANDY ONE OF MAGNIFICENT SEVEN
RANGERS have news of seven transfers on a very hectic deadline day. Four players have joined the club, with three leaving.
Director of football Gerry Francis explains:" It has been the busiest deadline day I’ve ever had as a manager in terms of phone calls and chasing around. It’s been really hectic and I’ve had a headache most of the day! A lot of the staff at Rangers on the football side and on the secretarial side deserve a pat on the back because they worked very hard with the situation.
"We have signed striker Ross Weare on a permanent basis for a nominal fee from East Ham United. He’s a played a few reserve games for us and he’s not done too badly. He’s young, he’s got good pace and he’s a very good size. Things that people are crying out for really. Ross is one for the future and we’ve signed him with that in mind.
"We’ve also bought Jermaine Darlington from Aylesbury United for £25,000. He plays wing-back, left or right, and I feel he is an all-round player who can fill a number of positions. Jermaine has been pretty outstanding for Aylesbury, who are top of the Ryman League. He’s a talented player. Very, very quick. He also has an eye for a goal and scores quite a few. He’s very much like Chris Hughton, my old associate at Tottenham, and we are hoping that Jermaine can develop into a very good player for us.
"We’ve taken Andy Linighan from Crystal Palace on loan until the end of the season, with a view to defensive cover. He’s a very experienced player and a leader. We’ve got a number of defenders injured, plus others who are only one booking away from a suspension. So I’m very pleased that we have been able to get Andy.
"And we’ve taken a young striker from Fulham called Luke Cornwall on loan. He’s an exciting player who Fulham feel will do well, but they’ve got such a strong squad that Kevin Keegan has very kindly allowed us to take Luke.
"Rob Steiner has returned to Bradford City after his three months here, and I understand he’s moved on to Walsall on loan until the end of the season. That is disappointing in some ways, because he had done quite well for us. But the overall package - both in Rob’s fee and also in his contract - was rather high. His loan here was finished and we had to make a decision. Maybe the situation is not dead. He’ll still be at Bradford City at the end of the season and perhaps our financial situation might be a bit better then.
"Paul Bruce has joined Cambridge United on loan until the end of the season and Richard Hurst has moved to Aylesbury United on loan. Both situations could be with a view to permanent transfer."

JERMAINE'S SECOND CHANCE
NEW SIGNING Jermaine Darlington is excited about being given a second chance to build his career as a pro footballer.
Jermaine, who is 25 in two weeks time, started out as a youngster at Charlton Athletic before drifting into the non-League scene. He has now joined Rangers in a £25,000 transfer from Aylesbury United.
Jermaine says:" I feel wonderful. QPR are a good club for me to be at and they have a fine record of bringing players through from non-League football, such as Les Ferdinand and Andrew Impey.
"I’m very grateful to Gerry Francis. It’s another opportunity for me to go into the professional game and I hope to do well. I was at Charlton as a kid, but it didn’t quite work out. I’ve been out of the game for five years, but my persistence has now paid off.
"I’ve been pleased with my form at Aylesbury. I’ve mainly been playing at left wing-back, although I like to call myself a utility player. Wherever I’m put, I think I can do a job there.
"I’m going to take full advantage of the chance that QPR have given me. I’ll get my head down and work hard."

ROSS EYEING FERDY'S FOOTSTEPS
YOUNG striker Ross Weare is hoping to follow in the footsteps of his all-time hero Les Ferdinand.
Ross, 22, joined Rangers on deadline day from East Ham United FC for a nominal fee. He’s hoping to hit the goal trial at Loftus Road.
"I’m over the moon at joining Rangers," said Ross. "Absolutely delighted! I’d been working full-time for Redbridge Council coaching at several schools in East London and playing for East Ham in the Essex Senior League. QPR scout Steve Burtenshaw came to have a look at me in a couple of matches, although I was unaware of this. Then I got a call asking me to go and represent Rangers in a reserve game. I had three Combination fixtures in all before the club signed me.
"I’m an out-and-out striker. I love to frighten defenders and score goals. I think my natural ability is my speed.
"I’ve admired Les Ferdinand throughout my youth. He is a great striker and I know that he originally joined QPR from non-League. It just shows how things can progress in a players’ career.
"So from here on, it’s up to me now. I’m going to do my best and I hope to get some goals for the club."
Ros got off to a dream start, with two goals for the reserves in the game against Northampton.
THE reserves won 4-0 at Northampton last night. The scorers were Linighan, Weare 2 and Mahoney-Johnson
