Borough booked their place at Wembley Stadium with a late goal from substitute Peter Vincenti after a tense affair at Stonebridge road. Borough scored with virtually the last kick of the game after two excellent saves from Chris Day kept Borough in the game.
Stevenage named the same side that started the first leg at the Lamex Stadium a week earlier. Mitchell Cole appeared to have shrugged off the injury he picked up as he passed his fitness test to ensure his place in the starting eleven.
It was a nervy start from Borough as Ebbsfleet searched for a goal to bring the game level on aggregate. Ebbsfleet forced a corner from the outset which Day punched away as it swung goalwards, Stevenage just about clearing their lines.
James Smith saw his header fly wide of the goal early on as Borough tried to keep their cool at the back. Graham Westley was on his feet to get his troops to calm down and with time they did.
Lee Boylan saw his shot aimed at the far post collected well by Lance Cronin in the best chance of the early going. Borough thought they had scored the vital first goal when David Bridges put the ball into the back of the net from inside the six yard box. Before pandemonium could ensue however, the referee blew his whistle to indicate the ball had gone out of play with Mitchell Cole before the ball was delivered in.
Cole was working his socks off and had an effort saved by Cronin as his shot was comfortably gathered at his near post.
Morison also worked hard and when he skipped round two defenders in the area he was unlucky to see his shot in the box deflect from a defender with no corner being given. More controversy followed as Morison was apparently hauled down when through on goal, a free kick wasn’t given as the referee waved play on.
Bridges had the ball in the back of the net again before half time after some great work from Murphy but the offside flag denied him this time.
As Ebbsfleet started the first half well it was Borough who came out the blocks first in the second. Andy Drury was set free on the right hand side and his shot was dragged wide with Morison showing his disappointment at Drury’s choice.
It was Drury’s last contribution as minutes later he went down with a knock and was forced to come off with Mark Albrighton replacing him.
Ebbsfleet lifted gtheir game and had two chances in succession. Bostwick tidied up after a backheel seemed to have deceived Day and then Luke Moore got into the area to see his shot rise over the apex of the goal, inches away from scoring.
Michael Bostwick came close with a bullet header from a corner before Chris Day came into his own. He made two world class saves to keep Borough ahead first with a stunning one handed save from Stacy Long and then with his feet minutes later as he lifted the ball over two defenders who would surely have had a tap in.
Gary Mills came close with a good long range effort that just flew wide of the far post as the game was in a period of unbelievable tension.
There were four minutes remaining of injury time, however despite constant pressure from United it was Peter Vincenti who came on to score the goal that guaranteed a spot at Wembley Stadium with a peach of a shot.
So it was that Borough made it to their third Trophy final after United had given a fantastic account of themselves. It was a tense affair but it was Borough who took the game.
