Bristol Rovers target Jamie Cureton move
Wednesday, June 22, 2011
BRISTOL Rovers boss Paul Buckle has confirmed he's had talks with Jamie Cureton over a possible return to the Memorial Stadium – with Exeter City manager Paul Tisdale admitting he's unlikely to be able to hang on to the striker.
Buckle has made no secret of his admiration for the 35-year-old marksman, who scored 20 goals for the Grecians last term – 17 of them at League One level.
Tisdale is now resigned to the likelihood that his top scorer will start next season at another club, and Buckle is looking to bring the experienced Bristolian back to the Pirates for a second spell with the Gas.
"I have spoken to Jamie two or three times now and he's very enthusiastic," said Buckle.
"All football clubs have their heroes, whatever level they are at, and I know Jamie is a hero here and loved by the fans.
"I have to distance myself from that a bit and think whether he would be the right player for the club and whether the club would be the right thing for Jamie.
"But the more I've thought about it, the more I like the idea.
"I know there will be other clubs in for him, but I wouldn't rule it out.
"If it's right, then we'll try and do it – but there is still a little way to go yet."
Rovers are one of a number of clubs interested in Cureton, who held contract talks with the Devon club at the end of last season, but has not signed a new deal at St James's Park and is known to be considering his options.
But a return to his hometown club – where he scored 72 goals in 176 league appearances between 1996-2000 – could well appeal as he approaches the twilight of a career which has also encompassed spells at Reading, QPR, Swindon, Colchester and Norwich.
Tisdale acknowledged he would love to hang on to Cureton, but said: "I don't think it is going to happen. If it was, I suspect it would have happened by now.
"It is not just down to football, it is down to domestic issues as well. I want to make it absolutely clear that we would have wanted him to stay and be with us next season.
"We have not fallen out, but it just doesn't seem like it is going to be possible now. He is looking at his options.
"Jamie has had such a good season that there is lots of interest in him. There is nothing I can do about that and I wouldn't blame him if he takes something that is more akin to what he thinks he can get.
"This is the downside of someone doing well for us. I am very philosophical about it."
