Posted on: Sun 17 Apr 2011
Former Northern Ireland interrnational team manager Lawrie Sanchez has joined the Barnet FC battle against relegation from the Football League and has agreed a deal for the final four games of the season with a role as football consultant.
The 51-year-old former Fulham and Wycombe Wanderers boss met chairman Tony Kleanthous and new caretaker manager Giouliano Grazioli at The Hive this afternoon to discuss his role. The chairman said: "We are fighting all the way and doing what we can to preserve our League status and Lawrie Sanchez provides top quality help".
Sanchez said: "I've come in to help Giuliano, who is a football acquaintance, with the big task of helping Barnet off the bottom rungs of League 2".
Grazioli said: "This is an opportunity for me to learn from someone with experience at Premiership and international level. He has so much to give and there is a lot I can learn.
"We've got a job to do and three weeks to get it done",
Sanchez has had managerial success in the past rescuing former clubs Wycombe Wanderers and Premiership Fulham from relegation, but the highlight of his playing career was scoring the winning goal for Wimbledon against Liverpool in the FA Cup Final at Wembley - one of the biggest upsets in the history of the game in this country. Wycombe, then in the Second Division, got to the FA Cup semi-finals against Liverpool under Sanchez, losing 2-1 after taking the lead
When Sanchez took over the Northern Ireland team they were listed as 124 in the world rankings and had not won for three years. He reduced that figure to 27 and also won a World Cup qualifier against England 1-0. When he left the job his side were top of their Euro 2008 qualifying group.
Sanchez made more than 500 appearances for Reading and Wimbledon as a player. He holds a degree in management science from Loughborough University from his days as a Reading player.
