Fortune Cook-ie By PAT SHEEHAN
INJURY-HIT Lee Cook is determined to play a part in QPR's promotion push - after giving the club £250,000 for the privilege.
Cook returned to Loftus Road in 2009, 18 months after a £2.5million move to Fulham turned sour.
The transfer cash helped the Loftus Road club stave off administration in 2007 and the midfielder even chipped in his 10 per cent signing-on fee to aid the hard-up club.
Cook, 28, revealed: "I just said to Rangers 'Keep that money'. It wasn't just like I gave them it and, hopefully, once we get promoted I can get that back.
"Mind you, I had a bit of a nightmare doing it. Six weeks later the new owners came in and Rangers were the richest club in the country.
"Luckily for me, they bought me back.
"I don't think the new owners know I did it and I don't think many footballers would have done it.
"I wouldn't have done that anywhere else but we were struggling and I've always been a fan of the club."
Cook never made an appearance for Fulham and rejoined Rangers after an initial loan spell.
And now, with sound backing from new mega-rich owners, Neil Warnock's side are on the brink of a return to the Premier League 15 years after relegation.
They face Sheffield United at home on Monday aiming to consolidate a nine-point lead at the top And Cook is desperate to get back into the team after being limited to just one appearance all season by injury.
He said: "I had a micro-fracture operation. Andy Johnson at Fulham had it and he was out for a year.
"I got rushed back after seven months and made it worse so I had to miss another eight.
"But now I'm finally there.
"I've put in a lot of hard work in the gym and hopefully I can start getting my name back on the team-sheet."
