Too much work to do,’ says Adams as break for Sheffield United players is cancelledBy James Shield Sheffield United Published on Tuesday 22 March 2011 08:43 MICKY Adams, the Sheffield United manager, has torn up plans to relax his players’ schedule during the international break. Coaching staff at the South Yorkshire club initially wanted to use this weekend’s round of Euro 2012 qualifiers as an opportunity for rest and recuperation as they enter the closing stages of their battle for Championship survival. But Adams admitted that idea had been consigned to the dustbin long before last weekend’s victory over Leeds. That result left United 22nd in the table and four points adrift of safety following Crystal Palace’s draw with Derby County and Sc**thorpe’s defeat at Ipswich Town. “Ideally you’d want to give the lads a bit of time off,” admitted Adams. “But I can’t see how we’ll be doing that now. “We’ll be working instead. That’s the way it’s going to have to be because there’s too much to do.” Ched Evans is United’s most notable absentee having been selected in the Wales squad for Saturday’s eagerly-anticipated meeting with England at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium. With Sam Vokes joining him at The Vale Hotel in Glamorgan and Daniel Bogdanovic due to represent Malta against Greece, United’s ability to fine-tune their attacking strategies will be limited. Bjorn Helge Riise, who could be poised to win his 28th cap for Norway against Denmark this weekend, is another player unlikely to be at Adams’ disposal after scoring against their arch-rivals from West Yorkshire. Instead, attention is expected to focus on a defence which, despite keeping a clean sheet against Simon Grayson’s side, had conceded nine goals in its previous six outings. Adams, who could be tempted to draft in fresh reinforcements before Thursday’s deadline for loan signings if Neill Collins’ injury turns out to be more serious than first feared, said: “We are always looking. We’ve had a few knock-backs but that’s what you come to expect. Not everyone wants to get involved in a situation like this but that’s life and we get on with it. “We kept Neill’s injury quiet.” Centre-half Shane Lowry, youngster George Willis and Jordan Slew complete United’s international contingent with Matt Harriott on stand-by to join the latter with England’s under-19s in Holland before United return to action at Queens Park Rangers next month. Lowry has been invited to join Australia’s preparations for their forthcoming friendly with Germany while Willis could feature for England in their Victory Shield tie against Northern Ireland. www.thestar.co.uk/sport/football/sheffield-united/too_much_work_to_do_says_adams_as_break_for_sheffield_united_players_is_cancelled_1_3205254

The (Sheffield) Star
Adams shies away from bully-boy tacticsPublished on Monday 28 March 2011 SHEFFIELD United will resist the temptation to try and bludgeon their way towards safety, Micky Adams has confirmed. With Darius Henderson - one of the most uncompromising strikers in Championship competition - eligible for selection following a one-match ban, some observers have predicted the United manager will instruct his players to try and bully opponents into submission. But Adams, whose side resume their battle for survival at Queens Park Rangers next week, has rejected those claims, arguing instead that the combination of industry and invention which proved so effective against Leeds earlier this month offers their best hope of avoiding relegation. “We were determined, fit, organised and committed,” he said. “But, coupled with that, I also thought we played some really good stuff. “We worked exceptionally hard. In fairness to the lads here, that’s something they’ve always done ever since I came in. “But we showed confidence in possession and worked the ball well too. We moved it around well and used the full extent of the pitch.” United climbed to 22nd in the table courtesy of their win over Simon Grayson’s side, cutting the gap between themselves and 21st placed Crystal Palace to four points. But with the Londoners and fellow strugglers Sc**thorpe and Preston North End scheduled to play two days before they visit the league leaders on April 4, the psychological pressure on Adams’ squad at Loftus Road could be huge. Meanwhile, QPR manager Neil Warnock has expressed his frustration at Martin Rowlands’ plight during an unsuccessful spell on loan with Millwall.
The Star understands that Warnock had been prepared to let the midfielder join United before dispatching him to The New Den where first team chances failed to materialise.
“There were others interested in him and I wouldn’t have agreed for him to go there if I’d known he wasn’t going to play,” admitted Warnock.www.thestar.co.uk/sport/football/sheffield-united/adams_shies_away_from_bully_boy_tactics_1_3227578 THE STAR (SHEFFIELD)
Blades boss has his players fit for purposePublished on Monday 28 March 2011 04:05 Physical conditioning a key factor in United upturn WITH Ched Evans, Daniel Bogdanovic and Bjorn Helge Riise all involved in the most recent round of Euro 2012 qualifiers, opportunities to sharpen their attacking skills have proved limited for Sheffield United. But the Blades have still put the international break to good use, boss Micky Adams revealed last night. With chances to impose his footballing philosophy on the squad of players he inherited following Gary Speed’s departure three months ago in short supply, United’s work since beating Leeds has focused largely on technical aspects of their game. He has attributed the club’s upturn in form to improved fitness levels, so those not selected to represent their respective countries have spent the past few days pounding the pitches of Shirecliffe. “Obviously with a lot of lads being away you’re not able to go over absolutely everything that you’d ordinarily like,” Adams, who also lost defender Shane Lowry to a training camp for potential Socceroos, said. “But that’s not prevented us from having a productive time of it. “We’ve looked a tdifferent aspects such as team shape both in and out of possession and other areas like that. “We’ve also been able to put in a lot of good work with regards to fitness as well. So hopefully that’s going to be of benefit. I think one of the reasons why we’ve picked up of late is the fact that we’re a lot closer now to where I’d like us to be when it comes to that.” Adams spent an anxious 48 hours waiting to discover if Evans, Bogdanovic and Riise, who scored United’s second goal during their 2-0 victory over Simon Grayson’s charges, returned to England uninjured. Evans was a second-half substitute as Wales were beaten 2-0 by Fabio Capello’s on Saturday while Bogdanovic started Malta’s narrow defeat by Greece later that evening. Riise, who is also expected to he handed a prominent role when United resume their campaign for Championship survival at Queens Park Rangers next week, completed Norway’s 1-1 draw with Denmark. Adams added: “Those areas where we have been a bit limited because of the lads who haven’t been here, such as attacking set-pieces, we can start to look at and work on now that everyone is back.” www.thestar.co.uk/sport/football/sheffield-united/blades_boss_has_his_players_fit_for_purpose_1_3227534

Flashback ...to August 2005! QPR OFFICIAL SITE - 13/08/2005 QPR 2 Sheffield United 1Attendance: 13,497 Rangers have knocked Sheffield United off top spot thanks to goals from Marc Bircham and Stefan Moore. Rangers took the lead after putting on an admirable display against Neil Warnock's table toppers. The first half had seen Rangers pile on the pressure and keep it tight at the back and it always looked as though the goal would come. Finally, Marc Bircham scored his screamer for the season when the ball fell to him outside the area and he unleashed a powerful drive to leave Paddy Kenny rooted to the spot. Stefan Moore eased the pressure when he netted the second in the last minute and it was a good job too as Steven Kabba grabbed a late, late consolation. Ian Holloway went with the 'if it's not broke' method and opted to field the same side that took three points from Ipswich on Tuesday night. And throughout the opening stages, it looked as though this was the correct decision and Rangers took the game to the visitors. It seems as though the second term in the Championship is teaching Rangers a thing or two and the Superhoops are going into game with more of an attacking way of thinking. Pocket rocket Tommy Doherty had Loftus Road screaming for a penalty when he was felled in the area with ten minutes gone, but referee Mr Tanner waved play on. At the back, Rangers looked organised when dealing with the threat of United's front men. Martin Rowlands then flew down the wing leaving a trail of Blades in his wake and crossed the ball in for Paul Furlong and it was only Neil Shipperley's last minute clearance that prevented Furlong from jabbing it home. The Blades seemed to be using some heavy handed tactics and it wasn't long before Rangers were clocking up the free kicks just outside the box. On one such occasion, Rowlands delivered, but Kevin Gallen could only sky the ball over the bar. Rangers put together their best move of the half so far on 26 minutes when Marcus Bignot threaded the ball through for Ainsworth and the Wild Thing kept hold of the ball in some style after side stepping the United wing back. Crossing for the awaiting Gallen and Furlong, the ball was just a touch too high and neither could gain any real purchase on it. Up at the other end of the park, Dan Shittu was on hand to cut out Shipperley's darting run into the box. Just as he was about to unleash his cross, Shittu was there to slide in and halt the attack.Furlong was on the attack once again Holloway was forced to make a change six minutes before the break when Tommy Doherty had to retire due to injury and Stefan Moore came on in his place. There was little action in the final stages of the half, but Rangers were doing more than enough to take the points after the break if such a performance continued. Furlong wasted no time in going on the attack and headed over practically from the kick off, Rowlands then caused the defence all sorts of problems before Gallen shot wide. Finally the pressure told and the Blades were cut apart at the back. After a period of pressure in the United 18 yard box, the ball fell to Marc Bircham just outside the area. In acres of space, Bircham picked his spot and fire the ball past Paddy Kenny who was left helpless in the Blades goal. After such a performance, the game was certainly worth being won with such a pearler of a goal, but Rangers would have to sustain the pressure for a further half hour. Stefan Moore then paved the way to goal by robbing the Blades midfield of the ball and making his way towards goal. Aiming for a long range shot, Moore tested Kenny all the way, but the keeper was equal to his shot and managed to pull off the save, despite fumbling it. Rangers did not let up on the pressure and substitute Aaron Brown set up Gallen, but the skipper bent his effort the wrong side of the post. Just as the Rangers fans were getting jittery about the five minutes injury time, Stefan Moore eased their nerves by finishing the game off with Rangers second strike. Matthew Rose had swung a wayward shot at goal which had ended up at the feet of Moore. Seizing the opportunity, Moore booted the ball goalwards and again, Kenny failed to move as the ball fizzed past him once more. Rangers fans were thanking their lucky stars that this had in fact gone in when moments later Kabba stuck the ball in the back of the net, but it was too little too late. Rangers: Royce, Bignot, Shittu, Doherty (Moore 39), Rose, Bircham, Gallen, Ainsworth (Brown 69), Rowlands (Rowlands 86), Santos, Furlong Subs: Cole, Shimmin Scorers: Bircham 56, Moore 90 Bookings: Bircham Sheffield: Kenny, Bromby, Harley (Gillespie 73), Morgan, Jagielka, Ifill, Shipperley (Kabba 77), Webber, Nalis (Short 73), Kozluk, Montgomery Subs: Quinn, Shaw Scorers: Kabba Bookings: Bromby, Shipperley, Morgan Att: 13,497 Ref: S J Tanner www.qpr.co.uk/page/MatchReport/0,,10373~29705,00.html

The Star (Sheffield) Hoops fire warning Shot Tuesday 29 March 2011 SHEFFIELD United have been warned they are poised to encounter the best defence in the division when their battle for npower Championship survival resumes at Queens Park Rangers next week. A prolific attack, spearheaded by Moroccan sensation Adel Taarabt, is often cited as the driving force behind the Londoners’ climb to the top of the table. But Neil Warnock, QPR’s manager, is determined the contribution of his back four should not be over-looked; particularly Danny Shittu, Fitz Hall and Kaspars Gorkss. Warnock, whose side kept their 21st clean sheet of the season when they beat Doncaster Rovers earlier this month, said: “That aspect is just as important. Of course we want to score goals but we also want to keep them out too. “We’ve got a solid base and that gives the lads further forward the freedom to express themselves more.” Although Gorkss has been restored to Rangers’ starting 11 at Danny Shittu’s expense, Warnock hinted the Nigerian could shortly be asked to resurrect his partnership with Fitz Hall. www.thestar.co.uk/sport/football/sheffield-united/hoops_fire_warning_shot_1_3229725The Star (Sheffield)
Sheffield United have no fear of Warnock’s QPR leaders Monday 28 March 2011 SHEFFIELD United manager Micky Adams has fired the first shot in the psychological war surrounding next week’s visit to Championship leaders QPR. Preparations for the trip to Loftus Road begin today as United, who are four points adrift of safety towards the bottom of the table, look to become only the second team to beat Neil Warnock’s side on home soil in league competition this term. United enhanced their survival hopes with a victory over high-flying Leeds earlier this month having previously dented Nottingham Forest’s promotion hopes at Bramall Lane. Those results, coupled with striker Darius Henderson’s return from suspension, have led to renewed optimism that Adams can steer his team out of the bottom three. “I don’t think we have to fear anyone,” said Adams. “Getting the better of two clubs in the hunt when it comes to the play-offs shows what we can do. We weren’t lucky (against Leeds and Forest) either. Both those victories reflected what happened and that, hopefully, will fill the lads with confidence. We know the challenge that’s ahead. But the boys also know now what they can achieve. It’s not going to be easy between now and the end of the season. But equally, these games have shown that it’s not over, not by a long chalk.” Ched Evans (Wales), Daniel Bogdanovic (Malta) and Bjorn Helge Riise (Norway) are set to be assessed by Shirecliffe’s medical staff after returning to England following international duty. “The only shame about what happened against Leeds was that we didn’t have another game straight away,” added Adams. “In that sense we good have done without the break but it’s much better to go through it on the back of something positive rather than a defeat www.thestar.co.uk/sport/football/sheffield-united/sheffield_united_have_no_fear_of_warnock_s_qpr_leaders_1_3227740

BBC Venue: Loftus Road Date: Monday, 4 April Kick-off: 1945 BST Coverage: Listen on BBC Radio 5 live and BBC local radio; text commentary on the BBC Sport website TEAM NEWS Adel Taarabt, who missed QPR's win at Doncaster for personal reasons, is set to return to the starting line-up. Hogan Ephraim is expected to drop to the Rangers bench. Sheffield United are without the suspended Lee Williamson, but forward Darius Henderson is available again after serving a ban. Defender Neill Collins is back in contention after recovering from the knock that forced him to miss the Blades' game against Leeds. MATCH PREVIEW Leaders QPR have lost only one of their last 14 league matches. Another win would take boss Neil Warnock a step closer to his goal of another crack at Premier League management - and send his former club a step closer to League One. Still smarting from Sheffield United's controversial relegation under him in 2007, lifelong Blades fan Warnock is desperate to work in the top flight again before his retirement. He is on course to do so, thanks partly to another former United man, goalkeeper Paddy Kenny, who has conceded only 23 league goals this season and kept an unrivalled 21 clean sheets. On Monday the Republic of Ireland international is set to make his 450th league appearance. While Rangers close in on the title, United are in the bottom three, have lost 11 of their 17 Championship games since Christmas, and have suffered five consecutive away defeats. But they have won two of their last three games. MATCH FACTS Head-to-head • This is the 50th match between these clubs. QPR have won 16 of the previous 49, and Sheffield United 14. • The last three league matches between them at Loftus Road have ended in draws. Queens Park Rangers • A win for QPR would be the club's 1,400th in the Football League. • Rangers have won an unrivalled 21 Championship games this season, and are unbeaten in eight at home. • A goal for Tommy Smith would be the 100th of his career, while Heidar Helguson is two goals away from his 100th in the league. Sheffield United • United are without a win in 10 away matches. • They have conceded the opening goal in 24 Championship games this season - more than any other team. • The Blades have picked up 10 red cards so far this term. news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/eng_div_1/9443597.stm
