Russell Slade's new reign as Albion manager got off to a losing start this afternoon after Sean Thornton's superb effort two minutes from time gave Leyton Orient a crucial victory.
Matt Heath had earlier given Albion the lead, only to then concede a penalty for Scott McGleish to equalise on the stroke of half-time.
With a new manager at the helm and with so much at stake at the foot of League One, it was perhaps no surprise that this match had the feel of a cup tie about it. It started at en electric pace, fuelled by the raucous Albion fans that filled the entire East Stand of Brisbane Road.
New manager, and of course, new players. Five in fact, but remarkably Albion didn't resemble a side that had never played together. Instead, the Seagulls looked comfortable in possession, and with Lloyd Owusu to aim at up front, they were able to enjoy most of the possession in the first 45 half.
And quite deservedly, they took the lead after 17 minutes. Owusu beat Jamie Jones to head on Tom Fraser's free-kick, Stephen Purches tried to clear it off the line, but Heath reacted quickest to bundle the ball home at the second time of asking.
Much of Albion's energy was emanating from Bangura in the middle, but the on-loan Watford man was fortunate only to get a yellow card shortly before half-time when he clattered Charlie Daniels.
Not for the first time, Richard Beeby had smiled favourably on the Albion, but moments later he was forced to point at the spot when Heath manhandled Simon Church in the area. Scott McGleish, much to the chagrin of the 1900 Albion fans, tucked the spot-kick past Andersen to level matters.
Orient were quick off the blocks in the second period, and McGleish almost doubled his tally, but his volley came back off the crossbar.
Heath then threatened again at the other end, when he met Kevin McLeod's free-kick with a towering header, but Jones was agile enough to turn it over the bar.
Albion came close on a couple more occasions; Bangura drilled the ball just over the bar, while Craig Davies could only volley weakly past Jones's right upright.
But with the game heading for a draw, Thornton got the better of Adam El-Abd on the edge of the area, and curled an unstoppable shot past Andersen into the top corner to give Orient what could prove to be a vital victory.
Albion: (4-4-2) Andersen; Whing, Heath, El-Abd, Borrowdale; Fraser (Livermore 61), Jarrett, Bangura, McLeod (Carole 56); Davies, Owusu. Subs not used: Sullivan (GK), Gargan, Hinshelwood.
Orient: (4-4-2) Jones; Purches, Mkandawire, Spence, Daniels; Melligan (Gray 58), Chambers, Thornton, Demetriou (Morgan 70); McGleish, Church. Subs not used: Morris (GK), Saah, Terry.
Attendance: 5885 (1915 Albion)
Referee: Richard Beeby
Yellow Cards: Chambers, Spence (Orient); Jarrett, Bangura, Whing, Owusu (Albion)
