Stijn Stijnen's career at the club has ended in controversial circumstances
The 29-year-old has been released by mutual consent after it emerged that people close to him - reportedly his girlfriend and brother - had allegedly engaged in a campaign to criticise rival goalkeepers Geert De Vlieger and Colin Coosemans through fan websites.
The former Belgium international, who joined Brugge in 2000 and had a contract for more four years, was relegated to the reserves after the accusations first came to light but has now seen his contract formally terminated.
A club statement read: "Club Bruges and Stijn Stijnen have, by mutual agreement, terminated their co-operation with immediate effect. This decision was necessary after the events of recent days.
"Both sides would like to thank each other for their co-operation in recent years and will continue to refrain from any comment.''

FC Brugge Release Goalkeeper After Brother And Girlfriend Sabotage Fan Internet Messageboards
FC Brugge got rid of former international goalkeeper Stijn Stijnen after his entourage was linked to comments on a fan website lauding his performance and criticizing his teammates.
Stijnen had already been sent down to the “B” team last week for “damaging the interests and image” of the club, but on Monday both sides decided to “end their cooperation with immediate effect.”
After the story of the internet slander campaign surfaced and put the goalkeeper at the heart of the accusations over the weekend, his brother and girlfriend claimed they, not Stijnen, had written the comments.
Stijnen made 30 international appearances for Belgium from 2006-09 before alling out with then-coach Dick Advocaat, who refused to play him as the established No. 1 goalkeeper.
The 29-year-old Stijnen was under contract with FC Brugge until 2015.
In comments linked to his immediate entourage on the fan web site blauwzwartforum.be, the goalkeeper was described as a “hero”’ or “wonderful” and “top,” while fellow Brugge goalkeepers and management were denigrated.
Stijnen’s family said in a statement to VRT network that his brother Steven and girlfriend Veerle “take all responsibility and offer Stijn their apologies, who, unfairly, gets all the blame.”
The two say their were driven to post the comments under pseudonyms “Frigo and Piop” because “the criticism on Stijnen for some time had been too virulent and, as brother and girlfriend, too emotional.”

This is a very strange story indeed.
Belgium international goalkeeper Stijn Stijnen’s career was in a bit of a downward spiral, so his brother and girlfriend decided to make it appear that the fans loved him and wanted him selected for the first team.
They proceeded to start discussions on well known club forums about how good he was, and about how bad the club’s other goalkeepers were.
They also blamed the club management for Stijnen’s situation online.
However, unfortunately for Stijnen, their plan backfired – and he now finds himself without a club.
As a sidenote though, anyone wondering why Paul Konchesky is on loan at Nottingham Forest might want to remember the words of his mother Carol on Facebook about Liverpool supporters in December…
