McDermott: Reading FC not good enough against QPR

Reading sacrificed their unbeaten record to Queens Park Rangers at Madejski Stadium with a below-par performance going down 1-0.
To rub salt into the wounds, Neil Warnock’s Championship leaders were reduced to 10-men for more than half of the game, and only had one shot on target – Wayne Routledge’s 81st minute winner.
Royals knew all three points would have lifted them up into seventh and one point from the play-offs.
Afterwards manager Brian McDermott couldn’t hide his frustrations with just his second defeat in the last 16 outings.
He said: “It's a real opportunity and we should have taken it. We’re better than that, we’re really disappointed because when they went down to 10 men we didn't make their 'keeper work.
“In the second half we didn’t play well enough, didn’t pass it well, didn’t get it wide often enough, didn’t get enough shots off.
“They had one opportunity and took it, that's why they'll probably win the league this year. Their keeper made a save off Churchy, Shane Long had a little chance, but we only had bits and bobs.”
The away win gave title favourites Rangers their first league double over Royals since the 1963/64 season, when both clubs were in the old Third Division.
Despite Royals having a one-man advantage after Hogan Ephraim was red-carded three minutes before the break for a late tackle on Jimmy Kebe, Reading couldn’t prosper in front of the TV cameras.
Striker Long played after passing a fitness test and being injected with pain-killers to numb his bruised hip before the game.
His strike partner Church nearly broke the deadlock after a good Royals spell before the break, but the Wales international’s close-range effort from Ian Harte’s corner was blocked on the line.
In fairness, the majority of excitement for the home fans came from the dug-out as much-maligned boss Warnock vented his anger at the number of decision he felt went against his side.
Captain Matt Mills had a decent chance to silence the Rangers boss when he rose highest to connect with a corner with the game poised at 0-0, but the centre-back headed agonisingly wide.
Alejandro Faurlin then picked out Routledge with a well-weighted pass for the diminutive winger to chase down and slide under goalkeeper Adam Federici just nine minutes from the end.
And McDermott added: “The players are desperately disappointed, they know they're better than that, we have to go to Norwich and show it.
"Credit to them, they've shown real resolve, done a really good job, I'm sure that's why they'll go up. This is a tough place to come and they'll be delighted.
“They've got good players, good nous, they head it, kick it and do what they have to. My players have been fabulous over many games, this was a one-off 45 and we'll learn from it.
“If we had got the first goal it was a different game. We've taken one point from two games against Cardiff and QPR, the two top sides, we thought we should have had at least four. All we can do is look forward.”
