I could hardly make a cuppa - Delaney

TWO months ago, Damien Delaney hardly had the energy to make a cup of tea.
In fact, Delaney has only begun to start âfeeling human againâ during the last fortnight, following his career threatening thigh injury over the summer.
But tomorrow, Ipswich Townâs brave centre-half is targeting his second full 90 minutes of Championship action within a four-day period, away at home specialists Nottingham Forest.
Ironically, before his welcome return to the starting line-up at Watford on Tuesday night, Delaneyâs previous league outing was at Forestâs City Ground from last April.
He picked up an ankle injury during that 3-0 defeat at Forest, and yet it was a freak injury in training, which led to a blood clot in his thigh and an emergency operation, that put his career on hold.
âThere were a few dark days, thatâs for sure. The blood loss was the killer,â admitted Delaney yesterday.
âIn the early stages, just walking to the toilet or going to the kitchen to get something to eat, I couldnât do it.
âI was knackered, I was out of breath and I was light-headed.
âJust making a cup of tea, Iâd need an hourâs sleep after it!
âYouâre expected to come back and play at the level that the other lads are at, and yet I couldnât even string two training sessions together!â added Delaney.
However, Delaney considers himself to be lucky, rather than unlucky, following a number of messages sent to him by people who suffered serious complications to the same injury.
âIt was scary. People were going on about amputation, but I think that was a long way off,â continued Delaney.
âBut there was a massive threat of having to have part of my thigh muscle cut out. That was very realistic, which would have meant the end of my career.
âI had messages from people who had a similar injury to mine, and they were horror stories.
âI had a letter off a sports player whom it took three hospitals and nine hours to diagnose the exact same thing. She lost 90% of her thigh muscle.â
Delaney was recalled to the defence for the 2-1 defeat at Watford, and he is confident that he is fit enough to cope with another gruelling away game this weekend.
âI can play two games quickly. Wednesday after the Watford game, I didnât feel too bad,â concluded Delaney.
