I got this query from a Sunderland Supporter. And what a nice comment too re QPR - and hopefully will continue/resume being the case.
Hi
I’m a Sunderland supporter and I have a question I hope someone may be able to answer.
In the “Football Echo” here in Sunderland there is a “Yesterdays” section which features a memorable game from years ago.
This weeks featured a 3-0 win for SAFC over QPR at Roker Park October 20th 1979.
The picture shows Bryan “Pop” Robson scoring a penalty with a QPR player about to follow the kick towards goal. He is wearing what appears to be a Sunderland away shirt from that period like this one……

I’ve trawled through thousands of images (on the excellent QPR Message Board shown below) to see if QPR ever had a similar shirt, but have had no luck.
I remember a red shirt you used to wear and even the red and white halved number, but the picture clearly shows a different shirt.
There is an UMBRO logo on the right breast.
The badge shape does not resemble ANY QPR badge I can find.
You appear to be wearing white shorts and socks as usual.
As you may have guessed the picture is black and white, we’re not that daft up here, so I can’t give you the colour of the top. There may be a simple answer to this, the kitman may have forgotten the tops, but I can’t see that. There could never have been a colour clash between the two sides, so what is that top exactly???
Any help / answers greatly appreciated.
Good luck for the season ahead, seems to be going along nicely at the moment and hope to see the only London side who are not despised seemingly throughout football. The rich history of Bowles, Venables, Marsh, Webb et al is probably the reason behind that one.
