Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Kaka pip Premier League stars in football wages list
Almost half of football's top 50 earners play for clubs in the Premier League, according to a study by Portuguese magazine Futebol Finance – eight of those provided by Chelsea and seven by Manchester United, while Liverpool offer four and Manchester City, Newcastle and Arsenal one apiece.
John Terry Cristiano Ronaldo - Premier League dominates top wages lsit but Zlatan Ibrahimovic top
But despite the Premier League's status as the world's richest league, none of its stars are feature in the top three. Inter Milan striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic tops the list, earning more than £8 million a year in salary alone, with Milan midfielder Kaka and Barcelona winger Lionel Messi close behind.
That is the thought to be down to the pound's collapse against the euro, meaning the Premier League's ability to pay top wages has been diluted. If players really want to earn big money, it seems that Serie A and La Liga are now the most attractive propositions, as they were in the 1990s.
That is boosted by the fact that wages on the continent are paid net, not gross as they are here, with the clubs picking up the tax burden.
John Terry and Frank Lampard are the highest paid Premier League representatives, each thought to be earning £7 million a year. Their team-mates Ashley Cole, Deco, Michael Ballack, Didier Drogba, Nicolas Anelka and Joe Cole also make the cut, meaning Chelsea boast the most players of any club in the world in the list.
United come a close second, thanks to 8th-placed Cristiano Ronaldo, Rio Ferdinand, Wayne Rooney, Carlos Tevez, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and Dimitar Berbatov.
Barcelona supply six players, while Real Madrid offer five. Liverpool are next in line with four, with Jamie Carragher and Xabi Alonso joining Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres.
It is testament or indictment of Arsenal's policy that they only provide one player, new signing Andrei Arshavin, to the list, which is drawn from sources from across Europe and does not take into account bonuses or image rights. Robinho comes in just 21st, behind Michael Owen and, remarkably, Tottenham reject Freddie Kanoute, now of Sevilla.
