COVENTRY City Under 18s got their Premier Academy League back on track last Saturday with a well-earned point at home to Chelsea.
The Sky Blues went into the break a goal down but managed to rescue a point through an equalizer from Jonson Clarke-Harris and could easily have gone on to win the game.
Academy manager Gregor Rioch labeled his side's display as an excellent response to the previous week's 1-0 defeat at home to an impressive Sheffield United.
The Sky Blues thought they had opened the scoring early on against Chelsea when a diagonal ball from Cyrus Christie found Clarke-Harris who volleyed a first time effort into the net only for the goal to be ruled out for a marginal offside.
With Luke Bottomer pushed up to a more attacking role behind Clarke-Harris, he also gave the Chelsea back four some problems with his runs behind the centre-backs although it was the visitors who opened the scoring five minutes after the half hour.
With the Sky Blues thinking they had earned a free-kick on the right hand side of their area, Chelsea played to the whistle and broke away to score a comfortable opener.
The Sky Blues had the better of the second half exchanges though with four excellent chances to give them the impetus outside of Clarke-Harris' leveller on 70 minutes which saw him tuck away a close range effort after getting a knock down at his feet from Gael Bigirimana.
Josh Ruffles and Luke Adams could also have got on the scoresheet with clear headers and Bottomer also hit the side netting after chasing a long ball over the top and finding himself one-on-one with the Chelsea goalkeeper.
The result left Rioch delighted though as his side kept their cool in the face of some overzealous first half challenges to gain a valuable point.
"I thought the boys' discipline and application were excellent and I thought we could have gone on to win the game if I'm honest," Rioch said.
"Barring the first 45 minutes against Sheffield United the previous, the boys have been excellent all season and on another day I'm sure it would have ben a different result."
Team
Coventry City: Burge, Phillips, Bigirimana, Gudger, Christie, Adams, Rankin (Daniels 57), Thomas, Clarke-Harris (Willis 84), Bottomer, Ruffels
Subs: Henderson, Richards, Grogan
