The 61-year-old begins his first full season as manager at Loftus Road tomorrow with a clash against one of his former clubs as a player, Barnsley.
Rangers, bankrolled by billionaire Lakshmi Mittal, the club’s biggest shareholder, have been busy in the transfer market this summer, bringing in the likes Tottenham’s Adel Taarabt, Shaun Derry and Clint Hill from Crystal Palace, defender Bradley Orr and former Sheffield United goalkeeper Paddy Kenny.
However, Warnock claimed: ‘People say we’re favourites to win the league but that’s ridiculous – we’ve got seven or eight new players in the squad for Saturday and I don’t think any team with that many new faces gels right away.
‘Having said that, I’d think the play-offs are the minimum I would expect this season. We’re no better than that at the moment but, if we can get another couple of strikers in, we could even be in with a shot at automatic promotion.’
Warnock sealed the transfer of Taarabt from Spurs yesterday for a fee believed to be in the region of £1million.
Morocco midfielder Taarabt, who moved to White Hart Lane from Lens for £3million in 2007, spent last season on loan at Loftus Road and has now put pen to paper on a three-year deal at Loftus Road. ‘I’m glad to have finally tied Adel up,’ added Warnock.
‘He’s a player who has got a unique talent and I’m hoping we can channel it for the good of QPR. I’ve been very patient and I’ve probably worn him down over the past few months!
‘We’re delighted to have him on board and he gives us that little bit of quality that you need. He wants to play at the highest level and I hope we can help him achieve that.’
