Forest looking to sign Cardiff City goalscorer Peter Whittingham
Wednesday, June 23, 2010,
NOTTINGHAM Forest could join the race to sign Cardiff City's prolific goalscorer Peter Whittingham, after Burnley had a £1.5m bid for the player rejected.
The flying winger or central midfielder netted 25 goals for the Bluebirds last season as they battled to Wembley before losing in the play-off final to Blackpool – with Whittingham netting in both semi-final legs against Leicester City.
He is a huge fans' favourite in South Wales, after making a big impact in the three-and-a-half years since his £350,000 arrival from Aston Villa.
But, with only one year remaining on his contract at Cardiff, the Welsh side may yet be persuaded to cash in on their prize asset, rather than lose him for nothing under the Bosman ruling in the future.
The 25-year-old has already attracted the interest of newly-relegated Burnley, with Clarets boss Brian Laws believing the left-footed player could help steer them straight back into the top flight.
But a £1.5m bid from Burnley – who, despite their parachute payments do not have a huge transfer kitty – has been rejected in the last 24 hours and Forest could now step in.
Cardiff value Whittingham at £3m but Forest are believed to be ready to test their resolve with a bid closer to £2m.
The versatile player, who has had loan spells at Derby and Burnley in 2005, would fit in to the Forest squad perfectly.
Nathan Tyson, Chris Cohen, Paul Anderson and David McGoldrick all filled the role on the left side of midfield for the Reds last season.
But manager Billy Davies is thought to favour playing Anderson on the right – and does not wish to continue playing the likes of Cohen and Tyson out of their natural positions.
Whittingham could also provide competition in the centre of midfield, where Davies has also been keen to add more of a goalscoring threat.
