South London Press Today Warnock: Boro closing on WatsonWednesday, 21 January 2009 Ben Watson is set to join Middlesbrough By Richard Cawley BEN Watson looks set to join Middlesbrough - after Crystal Palace boss Neil Warnock admitted a £2million deal for the former England U21 international is close to being agreed. The Premier League strugglers appear set to win the race for the 23-year-old midfielder - with further payments included in the deal depending on the success of his move to Gareth Southgate’s side. Warnock said: "They [Middlesbrough] have spoken to the chairman this morning. I’m not sure if a fee is agreed but it looks like it will be. They are not far away. Our chairman is in Paris and in between flights he is talking to Steve Gibson." Watson’s future has been the subject of speculation since he rejected a new contract - with his present deal only running until the summer. Queens Park Rangers were one of the clubs who have already made a move for the playmaker, but it’s understood their offer was only a paltry £500,000. Now former Palace defender Southgate has moved for Watson as he looks to make changes to a squad which is battling to stay in the Premier League. www.southlondon-today.co.uk/tn/sport.cfm?id=2127&headline=Warnock:%20Boro%20closing%20on%20Watson
