John HardingDennis’s four goals included the first hat-trick by an England player against Scotland 1955
England defeat Scotland 7-2 at Wembley with Stanley Matthews the inspiration and Dennis Wilshaw the executioner in this annihilation of the ‘Auld Enemy’.
Dennis’s four goals included the first hat-trick by an England player against Scotland in what was England’s first victory over Scotland at Wembley since 1934.
Dennis starts his goal rush in the first minute, and two goals from Nat Lofthouse and one from Don Revie give England a commanding 4-1 lead at half time. Scotland then capitulate as Dennis snatches three goals in 13 minutes in the last third of the match.
The match was also notable for Duncan Edwards’ appearance, at 18 years 183 days, the youngest England player of the 20th century. Chelsea right-half Ken Armstrong collected his only cap, and later emigrated to New Zealand for whom he won thirteen caps.
1966
England defeat Scotland 4-3 at Hampden Park as Geoff Hurst scores his first goal for England in front of a 133,000 crowd. Roger Hunt adds a second England goal before Denis Law throws himself forward to head Scotland's first just before half-time.
Hunt makes it 3-1 early in the second half, Jimmy Johnstone then pulls it back to 3-2 before a thunderbolt shot from Bobby Charlton restores the two-goal lead. Johnstone scores the final goal six minutes from the end with a delicate curling shot that deceives goalkeeper Gordon Banks.
1974
Sir Alf Ramsey bitterly criticises the system which forces him to make nine changes in his England squad. “There is only one thing to do - punish the clubs concerned. If a player does not report for an international match or a training session, he should not be permitted to play for his club on the following Saturday.”
2003
Goals from Steven Gerrard and Michael Owen give Liverpool a 2-0 win over Manchester United in the Worthington Cup Final at the Millennium Stadium.
1955
George Showell makes his Wolverhampton Wanderers debut.
1889
England trounce Ireland 6-1 in the British International Championships at Anfield.
Birthday Boy:
Teddy Sheringham (1966)
