Burnley sprang a huge surprise when they transferred their Irish international inside-forward and genius Jimmy McIlroy to Stoke City. A youth international he had made his senior debut for Glentoran in 1949 and had joined Burnley in 1950. In 13 seasons he made 436 League appearances and scored 116 goals and was a principal architect of their 1960 Championship season as well as their Cup Final appearance in 1962. At Stoke he made sufficient appearances that season to qualify for a Second Division medal. Remained at the Potteries until 1966 when, after 97 games and 10 goals, he retired to become manager of Oldham Athletic having agreed a five year deal with chairman Ken Bates. However, with the club struggling against relegation to the Fourth Division, Oldham paid Stoke 5,000 to enable him to re-register as a player and he made his club debut at Southend on 11th March 1967. Oldham survived although they achieved nothing spectacular under his stewardship and, following a brief spell at Bolton Wanderers, he left the game to pursue a career in journalism.
